Hey Keitaro,

Can't really say that I had a best or worst cruise.
Although my recent experience on China Sea Discovery would have to be classified as "not one of my best" putting it very mildly.

I always board a ship with an open mind and carefree attitude. Sure, some cruises are better than others, but it's all in ones attitude.
For example, if I find a cruise to be lacking in the entertainment department, that's ok with me, I make my own entertainment.
If food is not exactly "gourmet," again no problem. At least I don't have to shop for it, cook it, and clean up the mess. As you know I am in the restaurant business, and truthfully, I do sometimes get tired of looking at food. I have been known to "run" to a Lido Deck buffet and grab a burger and fries.
Never have a problem with staff, as I always treat them with respect and courtesy. And in return, I am treated the same.
Fortunately I get along with staff very well, and at the bars, they wait for me to come in and chat with them and have some laughs.
And when I get them started.....................
Good thing all their Supervisors know me very well.

Cruising is like life, you get out of it what you put in.

Sure, crap happens sometimes.
But when you get some lemons, make some lemonade.

Enjoy your next cruise Keitaro, whatever ship it is.

Regards,
Mike

On every cruise I have been on there has always been something that bothered me, but it has never ruined the overall experience. Usually it's other passengers and their lack of manners than crew problems.

Several weeks ago while, waiting in a slow moving line to board the Coral Princess with my wife, a man in his 40's and his family was in line behind us. For whatever reason, he found it necessary to stand so close behind us in line we could feel his clothes. Everybody else in line had about 3ft of space between each other, but he found it necessary to be just that much closer to the ship. That lasted an hour and half.

In Barcelona, my wife and I had airport transfers to the ship from RCI. Well they didn't have enough room on the coach, so they put us in a taxi and told the driver where to go. Well it took the driver forever to get to the port and he looked a little lost. Then he pulled the taxi up in front of a big building along the water and told us the ship was docked behind it. When we walked behind the building there was no ship there. There were several ships docked 4 to 5 miles away and we walked there dragging our carry ons. The sidewalks were so bumpy that by the time we got to the ship the wheels on our travel bags were worn down. Needless to say the cruise after that was perfect, and probably the best we have been on (Vision of the Seas/Voyage #2/ May '98.)

I'm with Deck 9001 on this topic. I've travelled alone on most of my cruises - 14 in four years - and (as regulars will know) more than half have been on one ship, Sunbird.

As a result I've made a lot of friends among the crew, from croupiers to bar staff to twirlies to officers. Passengers move on but the staff, largely, remains constant.

It's great to walk on to a ship after almost a year, and have people say "Hello Mr Steve, welcome back! Gin and tonic?"

It's the main reason I'm hooked on cruising!

Best - GRAND PRINCESS, Med, 2000 (everything to do with destination, not the ship which is nothing special). Worst - MAJESTY OF THE SEAS, Bahamas, 2000 (not a bad ship, dull destination, but the real reason was the indifferent crew and truly atrocious food).

M.S.Grumple: Twirlies are dancers. Like shoppies in the shops, and chippies in the casino.

(In the crew quarters, the passage towards the twirlies' living area is known as "Fluff Alley." Or so I'm told...)

Very interesting Jeff. When was this cruise. If this was Carnival's TROPICALE, I heard she was not that great. The ship was not in a good shape and the staff looked like they knew nothing.

When I took the North Africa & Canary Islands cruise a few years ago on First European's Flamenco, one of the ships Greek Officers had been a bartender on my first 2 cruises on the Crown Odyssey. He had seen my name on the passenger list. Even though we hadn't seen each other in 8 years, he was waiting for me when I boarded, gave me a big bear hug, then proceeded to tell the crew what a great friend I was. I never had to pay for a drink or a single thing for the next 10 days. They even comped my shore excursions.

Nice story Whitestar. I'm amazed at the memories some staff have, especially considering the thousands of different passengers they meet each year. We went on a cruise minus kids, and the first thing one waiter asked me was "Where was Howard?"! He'd been our bus boy on another ship [same line] 18 months previously with kids. He'd just got married then, and now had a baby. Perhaps we'll meet again somewhere.

My best cruise was on SS Norway a few years back on a NHL hockey theme cruise. Hangin' out with NHL Hall of Famers and buckets of Coronas was the best!

My favorite cruise was the August '99 transatlantic on the SS Norway from Southampton to New York to Miami. It was perfection, and we cannot think of one single thing that was wrong. Our waiter, busboy and room steward were the best, the food was scrumptios, the 500 or so French pax were so interesting (they love this ship!!), the weather was typical North Atlantic with a little bit of everything (rain, wind, pea soup fog, sunshine, rainbows), and the ship was as solid as a rock. We rendevoused with the Norwegian Star on her maiden voyage to witness a complete exclipse of the sun together. We stopped over Titanic's resting place for a very moving memorial service, including the pax singing "For Those in Peril on the Sea" (not sure of the right title), the captain sounding the ship's bell - one time for each 100 pax who perished - and a beautiful wreath throw overboard. Steaming into New York City at dawn under the Verazano Narrows Bridge and catching first sight of the Statue of Liberty was such a thrill - made us ponder on how the immigrants must have felt at first sight of this beautiful lady. During the voyage we had daily lectures on France/Norway's history by John Maxtone-Graham. I've had 15 wonderful cruises on the Norway, but this one will always be the one I remember with the most nostalgia. If only such a perfect experience could be repeated, but I know it never will. Such truely perfect moments in life don't happen that often.

I think that would have been NORWEGIAN SKY, seeing as the present STAR of course did not exist in 1999 and the first one was not on her maiden voyage (indeed she might have been in Australia by that time).

I remember this particular cruise on SKY, or rather remember us very nearly booking it. It was her maiden voyage indeed, and the brochure DID mention a rendezvous with NORWAY... Though somehow we could not find out what NORWAY would have been doing at the time.

In the end we decided to stay home ...

best- hawaii-ss independence
great weather,tours,crew and
ship. got a tour of the engine
room and bridge.
the tours of the hawaiian islands were the best of any
cruise i have been on.
food and entertainment were great to. can not wait to sail
on her again under ncl.
note: her boilers were inspected
by the coast guard once a year.

2nd best-ss norway eastern carribean- a grand ocean liner
that steamed for 2 days until
you reached st.martin.
she still maintains some of her
original features.
note: being foreign flagged her
boilers were not inspected by
the coast guard. instead by a
independent company.

3rd best-bermuda-mv norweigan majesty-great island,food o.k.,
great entertainment.
many things to see and do on this semi tropical island in the
middle of the atlantic.
boston, mass. is only 2 hours from home so it is an easy port
to get to and easy to park verses new york city.
parking is $70 in boston verses
$126 in new york city and in boston you park in a garage.
in new york you park roof top.

worst-mv regal empress-western carribean
belize,honduras i would not want
to go back to. the islands are
very poor and i felt insecure.
the regal empress is a nice ship. the crew were great and so
was the food.
the cabins on board needed some
redecorating and the bath room
plumbing needed to be replaced.

Okay I'll join the topic.
Best cruise- I'll save for after I go on the Norwegian Dawn, to be fair to her. Otherwise, it's very difficult to tell anyway.

Worst Cruise- Inspiration 11/98 This cruise wasn't awful but the worst I've been on. The ship was hideous looking even by Carnival standards, saving about 1 lounge or so. The route was awful, slum after slum, the only time we liked St. Thomas the best. Other than that most things were fine, aside from the fact that they accidently put us at the Captain's table, I don't know how someone goofed liked that, but it wasn't something that ruined the night.

The captain wasn't there, so it was just a large round table to us, until we were told they made the mistake.
