I just saw a photo of the stern of the Island Princess. What have they done?!

Absolutely hideous.

I was so interested when I heard that Island was coming to Europe her and Coral were ships I really wanted to try.

Then I looked at the loss of the aft decks, the loss of half of the aft lounge and most importantly - the loss of the aft promenade deck looking out on the wake, which is my favourite part of any ship.

Suffice to say that I saw that and didn't book the cruise I was going to. Looks like a Cross Channel ferry from the back now. And that Princess logo makes it worse.

I just don't understand why looks NEVER come into the minds of the teams at Carnival when refitting - look at what they did to this, the Holland America ships etc - then compare it to the way that cabins were added on RCI ships. Sad.

I completely agree! They butchered her and most of the other ships of Carnival. Veendam, Carnival Sunshine, Vista Class, Eurodam, Queen Elizabeth.... I could go on. At least the gas turbine/jet engines are gone... But now it sorta looks like something's missing up there. Looks incomplete.

Comparing them to the refitting that Royal Caribbean does, like Voyager and Explorer, they make it work with the existing design. Although it's not AS good as it originally was, it's not an eyesore.

Typical Carnival Corp.

Last May during the refit they stuck more cabins on the stern. Carnival Corp has been having all the brands do this -- pile on more cabins even removing public space to achieve higher density/return.

They butchered the Prinsendam as well as for the same reason.

Funny thing is Princess and HAL must be embarrassed because they do not even post photos of the redone ships on their sites.

So far they are not showing plans for the Coral Princess to get the same treatment on her next refit.

It's such a shame that they do that to their ships. it's one thing to be ugly from the beginning (Epic), but to take something that looked decent and completely butcher it is disappointing.

Even cross channel ferries are butchered due to emission laws. Its one thing to loose wings on funnels(Coral Princess, Cape Finistere), but adding cabins ruins the profile too(Prinsendam, Rotterdam, Qe, Arcadia.)
Lets prey the Carnivore lines spare Qm2 and many others!
Yes Epic uglyness really helps appreciate ships that aren't so bad(Pride of America)...
But nowadays, stringent economics rules the waves and my advice is..hunt it whilst you can!

QM2 is getting its next May. The new cabins on the top plus wedging in the singles behind the casino and in place of one of the Deck 3L walkways.

Absolutely hideous. The aft looks like a ro-ro ferry ramp.

I like to look admiringly at my cruise ship from ashore. I couldn't do that with this ship - or any of the other ones Carnival has refitted. How can RCI manage to blend in the additions but not Carnival?
