P&O Cruises is pleased to announce that Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, will name the new P&O Cruises vessel Britannia at Ocean Terminal, on Tuesday March 10, 2015.

The biggest ship designed exclusively for Britain, Britannia is P&O Cruises latest “modern classic”, heralding a new era of holiday choice.

“We are honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name Britannia almost 20 years after she named the P&O Cruises ship Oriana.

“Britannia, a ship for the nation, will be the embodiment of contemporary Britain, and with her Union Jack livery she will fly the flag for Britain across the Globe.”

Carnival UK chairman, David Dingle

The naming will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be an event of great national interest. Let the celebrations begin.

Malcolm says: This will be the second time our Queen has launched a ship named Britannia. The previous Britannia, of course, was the Royal Yacht launched in April, 1953.

With her history of naming ships, I really do hope she says something along the lines of "I name this ship A ghastly looking creation"

Note how the press blahblah carefully avoids to mention that she will be registered in Bermuda rather than Blighty itself.

What is happening with her registration? She is registered in the UK at the moment. Apparently the Hamilton on her stern has been painted over with Southampton, but the lifeboats still say Hamilton. P&O's website says "as Britannia will be registered in the UK we will unfortunately not be conducting weddings on board".

It seems a bit fishy - are they going to change it back to Bermuda once the christening has taken place?

I really hope she will sail under the UK flag and with London or Southampton in her stern... Lets hope P&O and Cunard can flag their ships back to UK in the future....

Viking Ocean Cruises have confirm that their ships will be registered in Norway with Bergen as homeport.

I think I might also have to take back some of my scepticism. Maybe someone in PR at P&O finally woke up and saw how stupid it was to register a "UK flagship" (my words, not theirs) in Bermuda?

Look here, homeport is Southampton!

The lifeboats now have Southampton on them as well. rd77 I just can't help thinking it was a case of weddings v a Royal christening. Why change when everything is already 'in print'. Maybe HRH brings in more pennies than a few weddings

Anyway she arrived yesterday in glorious weather. I am sure you have all seen half a ton of photos already. There are some fantastic pictures around.

Oh Jeff.... but she was "designed specifically for the British holiday market".. perhaps they should have said her interiors were. Apart from the flag and funnels she is just Royal Princess to look at.
