Having been laid up in the UK Tilbury docks after being used as a hotel ship for the London Olympic games in 2012 the cruise ship ' Gemini ' has been reported as chartered for use as a hotel ship by Petrofac .

She is expected to leave shortly for the scottish Orkney islands port of Lerwick where she will be used for workers on the Shetland gas plant project.

The length of the charter is not at present known but thought to be for at least three months.

Good, everything else planned for her has gone up in thin air. She is expected in Lerwick by 8th July. [Shetland not Orkney]. She is not however showing on Tilbury's departure listing yet.

I'm happy to read that the Gemini is heading out to sea again, even if it only serves as a hotel ship. In late 2010 I sailed on this neat little ship, the little sister of FO"s Braemar from Cozumel to Grand Cayman and Cuba with the Spanish outfit Happy Cruises, which despite the name provided an excellent cruise experience.

Having been laid up in the UK Tilbury Docks and advertised for sale for the past two years, having last been used as a hotel ship for the London Olympic games, I can see nothing wrong with her being used for the same purpose again !

With the time she has been laid up it should be very obvious that not many companies are interested in buying a small spanish built cruise ship which is now 22 years old.

I suspect she has a high asking price on her .... and her owners do not have the most stellar record on maintenance so who knows what she is like below decks.

Still she would make a nice addition for the right niche players or maybe perfect for Fred. if they were not in such dire straights losing so much money from their current operations. Fred. could do her up as a sister ship which would be a nice match but I suspect they have bigger problems to solve to turn around the current losses at the passenger business.

Fred. would have to extend her as per Braemar, can't see them wanting her nowadays even if they were making big profits and looking to expand. It's good she's got some work, whatever it is, can't be picky over it.

I was wondering if the date 16 August was just a bit of a play by the crew as that would be 2 years exactly since she arrived back from the Olympic games charter. She's not going to get there for 2 days ago anyway

She departed Tilbury in the very early hours of 12 July [exiting the locks at 00:30 UTC] and is scheduled to arrive at Lerwick tomorrow, 14 July, 10:00 UTC.

I doubt there are any photos of her departure about?

Is anyone aware of an upcoming charter that will bring GEMINI to Australia? She is booked for a single-day visit to Melbourne in June next year.

I've just answered my own question. It seems that Cruise Retirement are a step closer to launching. GEMINI is scheduled to depart Tilbury on 8 April 2015, arriving in Melbourne on 25 June.

The ' Gemini ' seems to have more charters and uses than any cruise ship I know.

She was advertised as operating a voyage for the world cup football matches and that failed to happen.

She is advertised on a russian website as operating cruises while in use as a hotel ship in the scottish islands and now this retirement home type voyage to Australia.

Besides her asking price of about UK £ 45 million which is high for small 1990's built cruise ship, I have seen a report that she needs over £ 10 million of updating to meet all the new polution regulations and other work to be fully operational.

Do not think I would be interested !

News from friends in the Scottish Islands is that the charter of the cruise ship ' Gemini ' has been extended for another three months.

Due to work required on the quayside at Lewick she sailed about 06.30 hrs on the 3rd October 2014 and having gone round Sunburgh Head she moored in the harbour at Scolloway about 11.00 hrs on the 4th October 2014.

She is thought to be one of the largest ships to visit this port.

More details from Shetland Times

The accommodation ship Gemini, currently berthed at Dales Voe north of Lerwick, is shortly to be moved to Scalloway for the winter.

The vessel, which houses up to 600 Shetland Gas Plant workers from Petrofac, will be berthed along the South Quay at Blacksness Pier. She will join the barge Bibby Challenge, which is occupied by around 300 BP staff, in the village.

According to the SIC, which runs Scalloway Harbour, it will be a more sheltered berth, offering more protection for the vessel and for residents in poor weather. The Gemini would be moved as soon as a suitable weather window becomes available.

The Gemini will be the largest vessel to enter Scalloway Harbour, with an overall length of 164 metres and beam of 22 metres. The harbour entrance was dredged in 2013 to a depth of 8.7 metres to straighten the approach for larger vessels and the South Quay has an available depth of 6.5 metres.

SIC director of infrastructure services Maggie Sandison said: “It is welcome news that a vessel of this size is now able to berth in Scalloway harbour.

“These workers will add to those already now based in Scalloway and we are in discussions with Petrofac and local agencies on how to ensure that the community can best absorb these extra numbers with minimal impact.”
