Indeed Aussie1 - I have just spent 9 wonderful nights aboard. What a ship! well more like my own private yacht

Portuscale Cruises have certainly done a good job and the onboard product is excellent. Good food, service etc. I've not finished all the pictures yet - far too many as usual - but her interior can be viewed.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your cruise on Funchal, Pam. I did a 12-night cruise on her several years back from Fremantle, Western Australia. She is truly unique and one of only a handful of vessels to sail into her 50s.

She is booked to visit several ports in southeast Australia in February/March next year, although nothing has been announced officially as yet. Presumably she has been chartered by someone locally. It will be interesting to see what eventuates.

Interesting JonC. I have not seen anything advertised about an Australian Season, but she seems to have been quite popular in Australia in the past. Quite different to any of the other offerings

I hope it is going to happen.

Thanks Pam. I noticed that news item too. Judging from the port bookings, she will be making a number of short cruises from the regional Victorian port of Geelong (near Melbourne) to Tasmania and the Bass Strait islands, which is a completely new niche market. I'm guessing that she will operate some cruises from another smaller Australian port as well. If the season goes ahead, it will be the first time that Funchal has left Europe since her last season in Australia in 2007/2008.

"..will sail from Barcelona on January 4 on a 44-night southbound voyage to Geelong, 75kms southwest of Melbourne.
Korobko said she will operate cruises between Geelong and the NSW regional port of Newcastle, 170kms north of Sydney.

On March 10 Funchal will make a 56-night northbound repositioning voyage from Newcastle which will be marketed under the banner ‘Battlefields and Centenary at Anzac Cove.'

From SI She's not going to be spending very long in Aus, but the return voyage will be interesting.

Interestingly, the only capital city port she is currently booked to visit is Hobart (Tasmania). Other calls are at small, regional ports. I wonder if this is designed to minimize port charges. The turnaround ports of Geelong and Newcastle are both served by nearby airports, but they only cater to limited domestic operations.

It's certainly an unusual deployment, but nevertheless great to see the beautiful Funchal back in Australian waters again.
