"Our engineers, along with expert consultants from the motor's manufacturer, and our Marine Operations team in Miami, have continued working around the clock to resolve the mechanical issues onboard Celebrity Millennium," Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., told Cruise Critic. Royal Caribbean is the parent company of Celebrity.
"Together, they have been doing everything they can to fully determine the root cause of the problem. Regrettably, as of this time, they have been unable to find a satisfactory solution that would enable the ship to continue with its sailing."
Chartered flights, leaving directly from Ketchikan, will begin departing tomorrow, August 21. The line is flying in 30 members of its guest services team to help with arrangements.
All passengers will be given a full refund of their cruise fares, as well as a 100 percent future cruise certificate worth the cruise fare paid for the sailing.
Last week Millennium was stranded in Seward for four days after problems with a "propulsion unit."
The cancelled cruises were scheduled for departure on: - August 23, 2013, - August 30, 2013, - September 6, 2013 and - September 13, 2013

I'm surprised there isn't a yard on the west coast (Victoria, Portland, San Francisco) that can do this? Maybe they're full, or the nature of the repair requires Grand Bahama's cruise ship speciality. Still, how will they transport her there? Seems like it might be expensive/dangerous to tow.

Ketchikan airport only has one runway. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I'm sure it would cost a lot more for the work to be done in a US shipyard, which is the whole reason for Grand Bahama Shipyard's existence in the first place. Numerous cruise lines use that facility, which is also very close to South Florida where so many ships are based. MILLENNIUM is still operable, they just cannot make their scheduled itineraries, and I believe she will sail to Freeport under her own power.
From Events at Sea.
It's a long way from Alaska via the Canal to the Bahamas. They said they could sail but very slowly. Even though it's been a quiet hurricane season who knows what will happen enroute.Frosty 4

Nothing really to it, the 3 aircraft ended up doing runs to Anchorage and Seattle, so at any one time there was only one aircraft at the airport, bus the pax over and clear the strip.
How much faster does she run in normal service?

That seems odd. In my experience that's Royal Caribbean's standard cruising speed.
it was never a speed issue, it was a USCG issue. They were not going to allow her to sail with passengers with only one operational pod.
They are installing a new pod in Freeport. And the reason they are going all the way to Freeport is the pod is coming from Europe and the removal and subsequent installation requires a special cradle and machinery.

I understand why they went to Freeport for the repairs. Are they planning to remove repair and replace the pod in time and does that mean the one they are installing in Freeport is only a temporary loaner while her original gets fixed? If that's the case it means there's a second dry docking yet to be scheduled/announced to do the swap at some later date.
I recall sailing in the identical Summit that they can make 24 knots.

It does seem like it would be odd to make a temporary repair even though some of the language sounded that way. Good thing their is a spare around .... maybe they should start carrying it with them like the spare blades based on all the problems the pods have given them.
