This just in from Celebrity:

The Galapagos National Park has cited Celebrity Xpedition for transportation and storage of 12 kilograms of frozen lobster tails in the Galapagos while out of season. Because of this, Celebrity Xpedition’s license that is necessary to enter the Galapagos National Park has been temporarily suspended by the local authority. Unfortunately, it is necessary to cancel the June 2 sailing of Celebrity Xpedition.

Celebrity Cruises is deeply sorry for this unexpected impact on our guests’ vacation. We understand their excitement and anticipation for exploring the Galapagos onboard Celebrity Xpedition. Celebrity Cruises is committed to complying with the rules and regulations of the Galapagos, which are put in place to protect and safeguard this unique and pristine environment.

We ask that any guests booked on the Sunday, June 2, sailing of Celebrity Xpedition please call us at 1-888-829-4050 in the U.S. and 1-408-916-9001 internationally.

I saw them tweet this earlier today. Seems like the most humorous reason I've seen for a cruise line to have to cancel a voyage. I wonder if the food and beverage manager held a meeting to discuss who to challenge the wrath of; the national park officials or cruise passengers without lobster tails, lol.

If ships stores were stocked before the voyage, are they claiming that the lobster was fished fresh, out of season?

I've never heard of a ship being fined for what is in its freezer?

Where did the lobster come from, where was it stocked from and if a ships license can be revoked due to ships stores, I guess whoever ordered the stock should be advised not to do so again?

The Galapagos Islands have very strict rules and regulations regarding imports, some can be read here, but probably not the same as those for a visiting ship. Lobster (I assume it comes under shellfish) can only be imported frozen without shells there.

Maybe lobster cannot be imported or be aboard in any state out of season. Celebrity will have known the rules and although it might seem odd to us there will be good reason, and they (Celebrity) should have abided by them. Someone's head may be on the block.

I did not know how specific rules were as to stores and food. You learn something new every day.

Thanks Pam.

A bit more on this. From various reports it appears a new regulation came in to force which requires that all lobsters be consumed within five days of the end of the season. Although purchased locally within the season and frozen, the 5 days had run out as the season ended on 30 December. It seems the regulation wasn't published until 22 April, but I can't find anything official on that.

The inspection and 'discovery' too place in March - the report is here, where it says "In total counted and weighed 12 kg of pulp of lobster, 36 pieces of lobster tail split in half and empty lobster shells 62, mostly not permitted by the Size to be fished."

3 months before cancelled cruises. Were Celebrity appealing against this and hoping they did not have the take this action? If it is true about not having been advised then it all does seem a bit harsh on Celebrity when no harm has been done.

Note that on the page Frosty 4 linked to in the Carnival Vista thread, it says "In total, Celebrity canceled four Galapagos cruises after it was discovered that the Xpedition had locally caught lobster outside the season for lobster."

Anyone reading that without knowing the story would be under the impresson that Xpedition had been catching lobster out of season

I agree...it's very misleading. In fact, a lot of stuff on that page should be taken with a grain of salt....especially the "from a passenger" posts.
