According to the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), MARCO POLO should be getting underway from Sortland tonight.
Around 8pm last night, March 9th, while sailing in the Sortlandssundet narrows, MARCO POLO made contact with the seabed in an area where there, at least according to the charts, should be sufficient depth under the keel. The ship sustained a 40cm gash in one of the ballast tanks, which now has been repaired. MARCO POLO has been been given permission by Norwegian maritime authorities to continue her voyage.
The Sorltand Harbour Master, Hugo Næss, states:-
"The ship has gone on a shoal that no one knew was there. I've never been away for something similar"
"Now we come to contact md Coastal Administration to immediately get updated charts."
I would not think the passengers will be very happy at these changes !
They are now missing out on two of her advertised full daytime port calls, at Andalsnes and Bergen, according to the AIS information on the ship !
