MSC Melody, built in 1982 as Atlantic for Home Lines, and sailing for MSC Cruises since 1997, is leaving the fleet.
MSC Cruises said the decision to retire one of its first and most traditional cruise ships reflects the company’s desire to offer the highest standards in product innovation and ‘the maximum in comfort, elegance and technology across the entire fleet.’ The 35,143gt MSC Melody has capacity for just over 1,000 passengers in 532 cabins.
MSC Cruises had acquired the ship after it operated from Florida for Premier Cruise Lines as StarShip Atlantic. The vessel was built at C.N.I.M. in France for $100m for Home Lines.
It was sent to Durban for significant refurbishment and embarked on its maiden voyage for MSC as Melody on May 1, 1997, bound for Genoa. The ship has operated various itineraries all over the world since then, most recently in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and South Africa. It was renamed MSC Melody in 2004.
MSC Cruises said it will be contacting passengers booked on summer cruises in the coming days to offer them alternative choices.
