The Golden Lion was a half-assed attempt at a British pub from the beginning. It is not much better now. The scale and space is all wrong. I have never seen a pub with a Dampa strip ceiling either. A pressed tin ceiling would make it look more authentic.

I wonder if the original light-colored/patterned carpeting used in many spaces and cabins on QM2 was just to difficult to maintain.
quote:Originally posted by lasuvidaboy:I agree about the ceiling in the Golden Lion. It could have been pressed metal or just a darker color. The new chairs look standard issue cruise-ship. The Champagne bar has been ruined w/that carpeting and new upholstery. It's starting to look a bit like the decor on QM w/all the different patterns (six including the carpeting!) and throw pillows.
I'm with you on this for the most part. QM2 seems to be losing some of her uniqueness and elegance. Those chairs in the new Golden Lion look like something from a Greek cruise ship in the 80's and not very "pub like". I think you and I are two of the only people that preferred the Chart Room as originally designed. It was so elegant. Now it could be on any number of ships. On the positive, I think the carpet and chairs in the Commodore Club look superb. Very smart and almost nautical.
Rather than this fairly minor cosmetic update (that Cunard is playing up as something much more substantial), I would have rather seen work done on the four areas that probably need it most. The Winter Garden, the Boardwalk Cafe, King's Court, and Todd English. Instead, I don't believe any of those areas were touched.
When I see the major $$ and planning that Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are spending to upgrade their older ships, I'm a bit disappointed in what Cunard has done with QM2.
I'm also rather surprised to see the rust colored couches in the standard cabins have not been replaced or reupholstered. They are looking dated.
Ernie - still a fan of QM2 and looking forward to a crossing on her Jan 3rd!
