However here are a few taken through heavy rain! The balconies are within the hull and can only be determined by the horizontal railings. The sponson is a bit big and wavy imho but not too bad and could have been a lot worse
What was the reason for the sponson? Just stability or regulations too?
It's not that bad, could be worse- but could be better.

Most likely stability due to the added weight of 20 plus cabins. The verandas look good and the sponson no that bad. One of Carnival's better refits.

Never heard that a phase two was planned. When is that suppose to take place?
This is for many reasons, not to mention the capacity of the lifeboats. Also, the work involved would not pay itself off, IMO.
I heard that the capacity of the 6 extra cabins was outweighed by the fact that the number of upper berths sold (post refit) would decrease meaning that the safety certificate was still valid.
Did'nt this refit add 20-plus addditional cabins? The veranda cabins as well as more inside cabins.

The old running joke about aft facing cabins has been done to death.
This refit has just proven that P&O plan keeping Oriana long term and I am guessing that means over 30 years of service. It is only 16 years old. Its a shame the Carnival group were not too stingy with money as they could have added far more innovations to that ship to bring it into line with the rest of the fleet.

I'd be happy if they just built a few more like Oriana (with more verandas of course) as she has one of the few pleasing profiles out there.
It is going to be interesting to see what the new Viking cruise ships look like as the present CEO of Viking River Cruises was also the CEO of the 1970's Viking Cruise Line when they operated three deluxe cruise ships which are still in service..

If I had to bet, they will be morphed, larger versions of the R-Class with exterior lines and interiors remarkably similar to the current Viking fleet all courtesy of Y&S.
