I read on another site that Oriana's ongoing refit and conversion to an adults-only cruise ship has been delayed. The planned December 9th cruise was cancelled as well as few other cruises according to the report. The new sponson is in place but I have not seen any images of the new veranda cabins.

These cruises were cancelled back in September [9,12 & 17 Dec] with passengers given various options inc transfer to Arcadia. I am sure someone must have some photos of the balconies by now, but can't find any either.

I just saw night-time images of her back in the water and the sponson does not look that bad. Still no sign of the new veranda cabins.

There probably are not too many photos around of her in Southampton today as the weather was particularly awful and she was up the far end at Mayflower terminal, arriving and departing under darkness.

However here are a few taken through heavy rain! The balconies are within the hull and can only be determined by the horizontal railings. The sponson is a bit big and wavy imho but not too bad and could have been a lot worse

No need for the panic over the balconies!

What was the reason for the sponson? Just stability or regulations too?

It's not that bad, could be worse- but could be better.

Not bad at all! In fact, I think that's the best sponson I've seen (or least bad).

Most likely stability due to the added weight of 20 plus cabins. The verandas look good and the sponson no that bad. One of Carnival's better refits.

I am very impressed. It looks like a job well done and they did not butcher the ship in the process. Finally common sense prevails.

Never heard that a phase two was planned. When is that suppose to take place?

NAL: what do you mean by phase 2? Filling in the stern pool area with cabins? I thought that wasn't going to happen?

I am not informed to know for sure, but recent pax heard and told me that a second phase is planned and the stern will have cabins/suites built. There are many rumors that float around ships, so it's unknown for sure if this will ever take place. It would be a pity.

The beautiful Passenger rumour mill. P&O passengers are something else! I am very confident that the filling in of the tiered stern will just not happen.

This is for many reasons, not to mention the capacity of the lifeboats. Also, the work involved would not pay itself off, IMO.

I heard that the capacity of the 6 extra cabins was outweighed by the fact that the number of upper berths sold (post refit) would decrease meaning that the safety certificate was still valid.

Also the lovely tiered aft decks are often mentioned by P&O and are apparently very popular w/passengers.

Did'nt this refit add 20-plus addditional cabins? The veranda cabins as well as more inside cabins.

My understanding is also that the fillling in of the stern pool area would add too much weight. Not even a sponson could compensate for it. I hope this is true, but I also hope someone can back my claim up, so we can all rest assured going forward.

If P&O was going add aft-facing cabins (which would have required removing the aft pool) I'm guessing that would have been done during this refit.

The existing cabins have been fitted within the existing structure in place of the childrens club.

The old running joke about aft facing cabins has been done to death.

This refit has just proven that P&O plan keeping Oriana long term and I am guessing that means over 30 years of service. It is only 16 years old. Its a shame the Carnival group were not too stingy with money as they could have added far more innovations to that ship to bring it into line with the rest of the fleet.

I'd be happy if they just built a few more like Oriana (with more verandas of course) as she has one of the few pleasing profiles out there.

Both Oriana and Aurora look excellent.

It is going to be interesting to see what the new Viking cruise ships look like as the present CEO of Viking River Cruises was also the CEO of the 1970's Viking Cruise Line when they operated three deluxe cruise ships which are still in service.

If I had to bet, they will be morphed, larger versions of the R-Class with exterior lines and interiors remarkably similar to the current Viking fleet all courtesy of Y&S.
