What is that big windowed area at the front of the superstructure? It looks very much like Costa Victoria.

Yes this whole refit is horrible. IMHO it is even worse than what Carnival did to some FANTASY class vessels. The current SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS refit also comes close however.

Did you know she will also be renamed as COSTA NEOROMANTICA? Ugh!!!

I only hope that sister COSTA CLASSICA will be deemed to old to refit and left well alone...

She is going to look very disproportional when the butcher job is complete. If Costa had stretched the ship also, the upper decks addition may not look too bad....

That area will house the new gym/fitness center. I recall there used to be a show lounge at that location.

I can't think of many major exterior alterations that have gone well. There are of course exceptions such as Sitmar's rebuilding of tss Fairsea and Fairwind which produced two ships far more attractive than as originally built. I also think that the 1959 rebuilding of the Independence and Constitution was well thought out (the original design was of course better looking) but that was a different era when exterior design was extremely important.

There's a hole in Costa Romantica's bow. The space is being used to add the new featurs of the Samsara Spa.

I don't understand Carnival's obsession with building above the bridge. Every time I look at the newest Carnival ships they just look bad like the Epic and it's not because of the extra decks since they look fine from the side. It's because the bridge is in the middle of the ship. When you look at the Oasis she looks great from the front and yet she is taller than these other new ships, the difference is that the bridge is the top. It makes a big difference in the perceived top heaviness of a ships appearance as we all perceive anything above that point as "tacked on" whether they are or not.

If they had carried the smoothness of the front surface up another two decks and then put the bridge she may have a better appearance. It appears that they are doing extensive renovations to the bridge anyway.

I never did like the goofy round dish on top of Romantica and Classica, the space just felt odd to me.

She has just moved [24 Jan] to the next basin and out of view of the webcam. See here. I don't really think Moby Wonder is berthed like that either

The last photo I have seen is dated 19 Jan here.

NCL had that extra deck above the bridge on the NORWAY, which I think was a waste of money and it made her look terrible.
I'm not crazy about the look to the COSTA ROMANTICA either, it makes her appear too top heavy. I think the problem here is, 'we've got to do anything we can to make these ships outdo the others, even if the looks are'nt appealing.' Give me the looks of the older ships of the past that cruising first started out as and then I'll start cruising again.

I agree that the extra decks added to Norway ruined her once beautiful profile but the alterations allowed her to compete with more modern tonnage coming on line. Norway was getting tired and NCL had little choice but to increase her capacity and scope of facilities. The sleek Atlantic greyhound profile was sacrificed in the process.

When I first saw the rendering Thad posted I thought of two things.
1. It looked like something made of Lego blocks.
2. Looking at all the mish mash of elements in the design (I use that word loosely) crammed onto/into such a small ship I was reminded of the days when people would put Rolls Royce hoods on VW bugs. And like the VW/RR conversions, the ship looks like a parody of her original self.

Looking at what she looks like in the latest pictures I can only be amused.

Now all I can think of is a lyric from Funny Girl..
"Oh, she's got very nice departments! Ugh, but when they see that assortment..."
