Cheren,

I've seen some comments by Costa execs that suggest that COSTA ROMANTICA is in for a stretch and rebuild. Nothing official though.

I got the Idea... now I have a firend on board Costa Romantica wich is one of the officers... but I didn't ask anything yet to him. On the other hand I think they just know about the drydock. but what are the real plans and sensible transformations?

If it is a stretch, the new section would probably already be fabricated before the dry-docking. Has it been spotted? If not then perhaps we are wrong.

I am with you Fairsky. It would be pretty difficult to keep the news of a stretch quiet because of the level of preparation required.

Still four months is a very long time for a drydock unless they are doing equally as significant. But maybe it is not all drydock time? Maye she has a private charter or some such thing?

I just hope the corporate guys at Carnival did not convince Costa to do the stick on balconies like they are doing with the Fantasy class.

A midships section was built for her sister ship in the Uk but was not used.

Perhaps that could be used now, if still intact, as it was no doubt paid for by Costa Cruises so would be a dead asset on their books.

The midsection built by Cammell Laird was scrapped upon cancellation of the Costa contract.

Ok here are the onboard official news. all is planned and defined. it will be a complete restyling. they will add 3 decks bow ending swimming pool area and 2 decks on the aft terrace area; 20 balconies suites added; the teather will be totally transformed in a relax area and all the lounges and public spaces will have a new design and utilization. for what they say it will be a magnificent work and plus the costa romantica will receive a brand new motor wich will be changed during the extensive refitting days.

So the 'greenhouse' will be removed? [wonderful views] It seems rather odd to make her taller, she has so very little deck space as is and it will make the lobby even more dismal. Or maybe this will all be changed? I assume the buffet restaurant is being totally repositioned as well? [I am only comparing to Classica as I have not been aboard Romantica but assume them to be similar - probably the worst buffet on any ship I have been on].

For what was described in changes, it means a structural atmosphere change, wich means also something estetical and external. I mean, costa will transfer the samsara inside teather so there will be a lot of brand new space on main lido deck (probably a new buffet grill?). The suites are actually 20 on the lido deck so it's not so difficoult immagine they are dubling them adding one deck up just before the disco. On the other hand I am very interested to know what costa will do on the secondary pool deck as well as for the actual internal buffet area and the external buffet "garden" just up on tango ballroom. Then after all it's not clear if all this means a stretching or not. For sure it means something that will really change face to this cruise ship and will turn her in something different considering what we were used to know before. I really cannot wait to see new deckplans...

I'm always amazed at how much ships get built up and tacked onto but we rarely see new life boats added. It seems like the only time they add new life boats is if they lengthen the ship. Are the additions stat small or do they really have that much extra life boat capacity?

When passenger numbers are increased they often add a few extra self inflating liferafts which can be dropped over the side in an emergency.

In most ships fitted with lifeboats and rafts the number they can accommodate should already exceed the number of persons on board.

It looks like they had some leftover tack-on's from the Fantasy-class midship balcony renovations and decided to use them here.

I find it hard to understand why ships like the Celebrity Century, Mein Schiff 1, and Mein Schiff 2 can have balconies added without looking like this mess Carnival Corp has envisioned. Even when the Costa Victoria had her balconies added it was a significant improvement over this mess.

Problem is these ships with high boats. They can not add balconies so easily because the boats block those additions. The Celebrity ships, Costa Victoria and the Sovereign could add a full deck of balconies because they were above the boats.

As for the issue of lifeboats all ships must by regulation have excess capacity beyond total capacity of passengers and crew. The rebuilt ships are rejiggering the calculations and putting more rafts aboard.

Looks like more handiwork by the innovative folks at Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding.

Seems they take their directives from one group only, the bean counters.

Aesthetics apparently plays no role when they are given an assignment. The task is simply to increase revenue by any means possible.

Poor COSTA ROMANTICA looks hideous, just like the Fantasy Class butcher job. So much for sleek Italian styling.
