From John Healds Facebook page:

MIAMI (June 15, 2011) – Carnival Cruise Lines will launch a year-round program of eight-day cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas from New York beginning in April 2012 – the line’s first year-round sailings from that port by the Carnival Miracle. On this schedule, Carnival Miracle will offer three uniquely different eight-day itineraries that visit a diversity of beautiful islands throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas. The itineraries include:

• Eastern Caribbean departures to San Juan, St. Thomas and Grand Turk, offered on a rotating basis April through October

• Bahamas sailings featuring stops at the private Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk and Nassau, offered on a rotating basis April through October

• Bahamas/Florida cruises with port calls to Port Canaveral (Orlando), Nassau and Freeport, offered November through April

These cruises also offer the convenience and affordability of sailing from New York on a year-round basis. Residents throughout the Northeast can simply board the Carnival Miracle in New York and start their vacation right away. This program also represents a tremendous savings in airfare cost for these consumers who avoid the inconvenience often associated with air travel today.

According to Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill, Carnival has offered seasonal voyages from New York for more than a decade but the convenience of sailing from the Big Apple on a year-round basis, combined with its unique appeal as a pre- and post-cruise destination, strongly influenced the decision for the new year-round program.

New York is one of the highest-rated homeports for ‘Fun Ship’ cruising. Carnival Miracle’s new year-round eight-day departures offer consumers the best of both worlds -- a choice of three attractive year-round Caribbean and Bahamas itinerary options with the opportunity to depart from one of the world’s great cities,” he said.

“The cruise industry continues to be an economic boon for the City, and today’s announcement that the Carnival Miracle will start offering year-round cruises from New York City will do even more to stimulate our economy, bringing additional visitors and generating nearly $13 million in direct spending,” said New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky.

So there you go. NY wanted a year round ship and you have the beautiful Carnival Miracle. Three great runs and prices that the beards think will excite opur target guests. There will be more news at 2:00pm EST and I will be back then. Cheers

Looks like they are finally catching up to NCL and Royal Caribbean with year round NY cruising.

I wonder if CARNIVAL MIRACLE will leave from the West side piers or Brooklyn? In the past Carnival has historically used the west side.

They should do the Caribbean itineraries during the winter months and then switch to Bermuda from late April to October....

And yes, I know the Bermudian government limits the number of ships that visit. It's just that none of the 3 itineraries mentioned above are really exciting.

Hope they stay in mid-town; Brooklyn, at least around Red Hook, is depressing...at least to me.

The funny thing is that Bermuda is begging for a ship to come and dock at St. George, and no one has one that fits... I think MSC could have done well if they had decided to enter the NYC - St. George's Bermuda run with the MSC Opera or Lirica.

Well if by anchoring off Murray's Anchorage and tendering in, you mean calling at St. George's....then yes. I think a few ships have actually stopped there on one-off itineraries, i.e. Seven Seas Navigator and the Silver Explorer.

St. George for various reasons has always had a problem getting its own cruise ships. Go back 30 years when the ships could fit the passage and they were still struggling to get a cruise ship to stop there. Only the ones who could not get to Hamilton would go to St George until the Bermuda Government basically forced some of the ships into a stop in St George.

True it is less developed there and at the end of the Island which makes getting around more difficult but it is also a pretty little town and its still Bermuda.

The funny thing is HAL made a big deal about going to St George on the new cruise and then piled so much stern weight on the Veendam in the refit they could not safely get her in the passage. Oooopppss.

Several years back I sailed on NORWEGIAN MAJESTY out of Boston to Bermuda. We docked in St. George and never left. I loved St. George and we rented scooters for the full 3 1/2 days we were docked there. It was great as we could just leave them parked outside the ship each night.

NORWEGIAN MAJESTY was an ok ship, nothing to write home about. Once was enough and it was the first ship I ever sailed where our inside cabin made those on the Sovereign Class look spacious! Our inside closet was all the way aft and smelled like diesel fuel all the time. We nicknamed it the "diesel dungeon". LOL. Also, after a couple days sitting in St. George the pools looked like mud. Nasty!

All in all it was a really fun cruise though. Made some new friends and as always I loved Bermuda.

Interestingly, I think there are ships that could fit in St. George, like the Opera, that could not fit into Hamilton. That class (Opera, Harmonia, Sinfonia, Lirica) are long and thin. They likely could not turn around behind White Island at 824 feet long, but they are narrow enough to easily fit in between the Town Cut at 94.5 feet wide.

St George sounds ideal for the 600' R-ships. Unfortunately Bermuda is a commodity run and smaller ships could not break even from the rock-bottom fares.

Celebrity had a contract to serve the Hamilton / St. George route, but sold the Horizon & Zenith before the contract was up. Therefore they had to have the Azamara Journey sail the route soon after she was bought, to fulfill their contract. People were not ready for the more upscale, less child friendly service, compared to Celebrity. Here is the Journey in Hamilton in 2007

Thats a shame that they sailed her there to fulfill a contract, not because they thought there was a market.
Those sisters seemed like perfect Bermuda ships.

I have thought that the Mistral, with a little paint, a lot of added balconies, and some work smoothing out her stern to be more similar ot her bigger MSC "sisters" could make a very nice Bermuda boat.

Bermuda Monarch anyone???

Have been to Bermuda 3 times so far (QE2, Horizon and Grandeur of the Seas) and, by far, it's my favorite island destination.

QE2 obviously sat at anchor off Hamilton but Horizon docked at both St. George's and Hamilton, which was fantastic. The Grandeur trip was kind of a pain because we stayed at Dockyard the entire time and, since we love the beaches near St. George's, we had to take a ferry over; which took a hell of a long time.
