Last week I stumbled upon the photo log being created by Phoenix Reisen for the extensive drydock refit of Artania.

Having looked around the Royal in 2004 and Artemis in 2007, it was money that should have been spent long ago and it is a shame that it wasn't - but it is nice to see that the German brands are investing in ship refits like on Mein Schiff.

Here are some of their pictures:

The complete log can be found here:
Phoenix Reisen - Artania Refit

I must say, I really like the way cruise lines are documenting more of their refits.

They do seem to be cramming in a lot of extra balconies. Are they removing a few lifeboats? Don't see how it would fit otherwise...

It looks like the additional balconies are located forward and aft of the existing lifeboats, nothing being added amidships, except for a couple between two davits.

When you like at this picture, taken from James Cussick's blog, there is more space than you would think when you look at where they are putting on balconies.

Looking at the P&O deckplan with the Phoenix deck plan, the balconies are being added here:

Surprised by the amount of work they are doing because traditionally they have not done such rebuilds on one of their ships. They are mostly a marketing company.

They are also removing at aft lounge to make a second dining room.

Was not Albatros totally refitted and given new engines?

Yes! They also did a lot of work on AMADEA, though not as much as on ALBATROS.

I think its great that when ships go to the German market, they seem to be willing to invest in them properly, like Mein Schiff, Mein Schiff 2, Artania, Albatros and even Crown Princess to some degree when she transferred to be A'rosa Blu.

P&O never seem that interested, just a lick of paint and a change of name is all they tend to do.

Here's a rendering of the final look:

I'm double minded about this. On the one hand I'm glad they are adding balconies and giving this classic ship an extension on her life and profitability. On the other hand, she does lose some of her original design elements and elegance.

At least the new balconies are integrated with the rest of the superstructure, and she doesn't look bad, compared to the blocks of balconies stuck onto Carnival's FANTASY Class ships.

Her exterior still looks very good even with the new additions. Nothing, however, can be done with the original, standard cabins which to me are among the worst afloat. Make them all single occupancy is the only solution IMHO.

I was on AMADEA and she has very little in the way of changes from her original Japanese days. The decor is even mostly the same right down to Japanese language signs on the ship. A few years ago I assume the Germans added some exterior deck in the pool area and the putt putt golf but that is really the only significance changes I saw since she was Japanese.

When I inquired on the ship I was told Phoenix is only a marketing company with a handful of staff aboard and the crew, officers, etc. all work for the owners who also maintains the ship while Phoenix does the marketing.

She seems like a pleasant enough ship but not the five or six stars of the other NYK ships at Crystal. However you could see similarities between the Japanese designs and the work on the Crystal Harmony.

The standard cabins would probably be ok if they were just outside cabins (mind you they would still be small). It's that they are balcony cabins and they are just too narrow to allow sufficient entry and exit to the balcony with the beds made up. I think they are even too narrow to be redesigned with the beds turned to face fore and aft. A bed may fit in that configuration but you would not be able to walk about it.

ROYAL PRINCESS was certainly innovative, but I'm very pleased the entire industry did not adopt her cabin design. What we have today is far superior.

The refit looks pretty good. Finally that funnel has a logo attached! I really like the P&O livery on Oriana and Aurora but it never worked for me on this ship. The new (odd) name reminds me of a combination of Mauretania and Aquitania.

Bearing in mind that she was built as Royal Princess 25 years ago a lot has changed in the whole design of cruise ships since then including the cabins !

Seeing the image of her original name reminds me of a cruise we did on the first Dawn Princess in 1992. In the right light on the bow, I clearly saw the outline of her first two names: 'Sylvania' and 'Fairwind'.

I like what they've done. Royal Princess was one of the most elegant ships of the 1980s, not to mention an absolutely trendsetting design. It seems only fitting that the ship that kicked off the balcony trend (she was not the first to have balconies obviously, but the first to offer them in any great number) is re-fitted to have additional balconies. I think that they have integrated them well into the design, such that they look like they were always meant to be there. In fact, I think that the original design has been enhanced.

I always thought it strange, however, that for such a trendsetting design she had no sister ship/s built by P&O (of which she was flagship until Oriana in 1995, even though she sailed for their Princess cruises division). Her true sisters, in design terms, were the Royal Viking Sun, and Crystal Harmony.

The Crystal Harmony was very much influenced by the Royal Princess and in many ways a very close coy. Not a surprise though when you consider that several of the top executives who helped NYK set up Crystal came from Princess.

Royal Princess' chances of a sister were likely stopped by the Sitmar acquisition. Princess got three big ships plus the older tonnage and had no need to build its own for a while.

The RV Sun clearly learned from the Royal Princess but she was a very different ship. As Ernie pointed out the industry was rapidly evolving and the Sun was a small ship with spacious cabins, a much lower density and much more of a successor to the first generation RVL ships with some influence from the other new ships. But Kloster also made some tragic mistakes that meant the RV Sun never gained the same level of popularity with the true RVL repeaters that the earlier trio had.

You're right. The Sitmar acquisition meant Royal Princess' gained a step sister in Fairsky. Both ships were of very similar size and both gave P&O-Princess great service over many years.

Royal Princess was ground-breaking with all her balconies. It's a pity their narrowness meant the ship was always going to be limited. For example P&O Australia never expressed any interest in her when they took Sky Princess because RP couldn't be converted to have a majority of 4 berth cabins.

The Sitmar acquisition in 1988 came just in time for Princess as they were seriously behind with ordering new builds. I think the main reason were the orders of the later Star, Crown and Regal Princess. Princess at that time was still a rather exclusive and expensive brand. (And a very old public) I can remember staff members leaving in the summer of 89 to work for Crystal

RP was the very first with the lower public decks and promenade deck. And cabin accommodation (with balconies) on top. Even when I worked on her end of the eighties she was still attracting huge crowds. She was also one of the first with a designed Lido Buffet, aft on the sun deck. which was also kind of new at the time.
We thought at the time she was enormous and the best around in the industry :-) Her crew accommodation was also very nice compared to the bare steel and neon lights you come across nowadays.

I am happy to see she's been taken care off and has a new life. In 2010 we were docked next to her as P&O Artemis and she didn't look very well looked after at all.

It's good to see, they have created an outside bar on the aft end. The old Riviera club is now a restaurant and wine bar. Even during the Princess days it was together with the Horizon lounge very underutilized. The casino is turned into another bar. I'll be watching her, never have taken a cruise on a German cruise line :-)
