Todays pictures include the CostaRiviera in drydock alongside the Festivale at NORSHIPCO in Norfolk, VA, the SSUS heading for drydock at Portsmouth, VA and several ships in Naples, Italy including the EugenioCosta, Royal Viking Sky, Sea Goddess, EnricoCosta, Maxim Gorky, and a bad blurry one of the Achille Lauro.

Back in the days when passenger ships were interesting!

Great images of ssUS being towed to the floating drydock. The fresh paint applied to the port side of the funnels during her final 1969 refit is evident. Thanks for sharing!

THANKS! Here's another of her approach down the Elizabeth River, the port side of the funnels looking a lot better. Not sure of the exact date I took these but my best guess would be sometime in 1980/81?

Great photos, bringing back some wonderful memories. I remember seeing most of the ships here (exceptions: ACHILLE LAURO, ENRICO COSTA, OCEAN PRINCESS, JUPITER) and now so many of them are gone.

You've also got a bunch of ships I've sailed in: HORIZON (my first ship, x2), MAJESTY OF THE SEAS, QE2 (x2), FAIRSKY (as SKY PRINCESS).

Edit: And isn't it amazing that SEABREEZE and CARNIVAL DESTINY operated from Miami at the same time? Miami and Port Everglades in the '90s were such amazing places for ship spotting then. Now nearly all the ships are (relatively) large and new and very similar.

man...looking at these photos makes me wish I could cruise back then. It seems to me that ships just aren't the same anymore.

Yes, those were certainly the best years of cruising. Still elegant in everyway, I miss the ones Tony and I sailed on, COSTA RIVIERA, GALILEO, SEABREEZE. I wish I had the digital cameras I have now. I never got interior photos of them, except for what little I find from my collection or from someone's photo collection on the internet. I love all of the classic ones you posted.

Great pics in Miami! Very typical of what I remember seeing when I lived here during the late 80's and early 90's.

The three and four day ships were always SUNWARD II, EMERALD SEAS, and DOLPHIN. I sailed on them all and have great memories. BRITANIS and GALILEO would do 2 and 5 night cruises I believe, and I sailed on GALILEO a couple times but never BRITANIS unfortunately.

Of course I never get tired of looking at ships like CARNIVALE, MARDI GRAS, and NORWAY. One of my favorite pics is your first one, that shows FESTIVALE. I adored that ship and even today think it was one of the best looking afloat. Such graceful lines and a full figured funnel!

Someday I will have to dig out the hundreds of old photos I have and scan them. It will be very time consuming.

Thanks for the memories! I've lived in Miami for 30 years and those ships are part of the skyline I remember best. Of course I sailed on all those ships, multiple times, and had just as good a time, or better, as on the current giants which have loads more creature comforts and amenities.
