Malcolm once used that phrase many moons ago to describe my hopeful, but sadly later cancelled, attempt to book myself onto a cruise.

Well, this has been a long time coming so I apologize in advance if this is long winded:

'Greetings' fellow CT'ers from the Cruise Maryland Embarkation Terminal for the Celebrity MERCURY in beautiful Baltimore! It's my first vacation in over SIX years, and this has literally taken me five very difficult years of blood, sweat, and tears to save up for this. I can't believe it took this long to get back on a ship!

No, this isn't the amazing Allure, a new Cunard Queen, a Dream from Disney, nor Norwegian Epic, nothing Nieuw or exciting here, and certainly this beauty can't 'Eclipse' any of the newest, biggest, or nicest Celebrity has to offer. But Mercury's remaining days with Celebrity Cruises are now very, very short in number (only 6 more sailings), as well as Celebrity's days sailing from Baltimore, so I thought I better take this opportunity to sail in her again before she transfers over to TUI to be with her sister. I am also glad I had the same opportunity to sail in GALAXY before she went away but that's another story.

Before the cruise I had an absolutely wonderful 3-night pre-cruise stay in a nice hotel at Baltimore's gorgeous Inner Harbor and did quite a bit of sightseeing (and dining) in superb (but very cold) weather, and I also have a 1-night post-cruise hotel stay upon my return. This will be a great two week vacation.

And believe me, I've earned this!

This cruise? It's 9-(wonderful)-nights to nowhere particularly special, places I have already been to (plus 4 glorious days at sea!). But the chance to sit back and completely, totally relax was too good to pass up especially after watching the rates drop so low and snagging me a *Single Occupancy* rate including *ALL* of my port charges and taxes for ONLY $865.00! Total! For 9-nights! I know! And from the landlocked (snow covered) Mountaineer State of West Virginia I didn't even have to get on an airplane to get to the ship. Yea!

But here's the cool part. I had originally booked a Category 11 Inside cabin down on the Plaza Deck (it's what I could afford) then a price drop before final payment allowed me to bump UP to a 9A inside on Sky Deck for $100 CHEAPER! Yea! Then 45 days before departure Celebrity had a WV Resident Rate where I could upgrade my 9A Inside cabin to a Category 2A Balcony for ONLY $65 more! Yes, just Sixty-five! Go figure! Now I am in a balcony for 9-nights for cheaper than what I had originally booked an Inside cabin. Big Yea!

Oh, by the way, yesterday I had the grand opportunity to tour the historic NS Savannah docked here in Baltimore. It was an exceptional 2 1/2 hour personal guided tour group of just 4 people. I'll have to wait to post pictures once I return home. I hope they come out OK. It was an amazing tour thanks to our tour-guide Mr. Erhard Koehler, the Manager, Nuclear Ship Savannah Programs. He is also the Senior Technical Advisor, N.S. Savannah and now acts as the Savannah's designated licensee to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was very gracious and incredibly informative. All I can say is WOW!!!

Needless to say that I won't be around on the 17th when OCEANIC goes through the Panama Canal so maybe someone can get the webcam grabs of her in the Gatun and Miraflores Locks for Deborah DAmbrosi! ;-)

http://webcams.pancanal.com/webcam/hd-gatun.jpg

http://webcams.pancanal.com/common/photo/webcam-hd-miraflores.html

Well, time to start boarding is at 11am. Already checked in and waiting, me the first person in line!!!! I am so excited I am about to cry!

Wish me 'fair winds and following seas'. I hope I don't get seasick! I hear it can get rough around Cape Hatteras?

Signing off for now,

David from West Virginia
Finally....Doing the Happy Dance!
(possibly for the last time)

Dave, Have a great cruise. I assume you are going down in the Carribean. Ocean Weather shows calm seas down there.
We haven't booked anything for next year-I would like to do the Norwegian Ffords, possibly on HAL.

Thanks! Mercury is heading down the coast to Charleston SC the Key West, Nassau and CoCo Cay, and 4 days at sea.

The Champagne Greeting upon embarkation was a wonderful touch! MERCURY is decorated for Christmas with 3 different sized trees in the Lobby and poinsettias and wreaths decorating the stairwells and elevator lobbies. The ship is also decked out from bow to stern is dress flags. Quite a site when first pulling up in a taxi. The crew are replacing bulbs in the string lights the go bow to stern and have the main strand stretched out across the pool deck. There are several Private Functions including a wedding that have the main lounges closed off for right now. I also checked out the Thalassotherapy Pool (which I loved on Galaxy) and plan on several Day Passes. Already dropped my carry-on off at the room and heading for a quick snack at the Palm Springs Cafe! The ship is so beautiful and in excellent condition.

YES, please do a review. And let see some pixs.
I usually take notes during the cruise as it's easier to remember the good stuff(hopefully nothing unpleasant).
Bon Voyage!

Already loving the balcony! It has two reclining lounge chairs and small table. The temps right now in Baltimore are about 45 degrees and my balcony is facing the sunshine so it quite pleasant. Rooms just 'officially opened' so I am getting off my feet after checking out the ship again. Food is delicious so far. I forgot to pack my stretch pants!!!!

Now let me make this clear: We all appreciate your postings but right now you are actually supposed to enjoy your cruise. Oceanic will or will not make it trough the Panama Canal (at least on the outside she looks like as if she is falling apart every moment) but now it's your turn to enjoy your trip. Looking forward to the extensive report you will provide us with AFTER your vacation.

Mercury is a lovely ship. It is a shame to see her leave the North American market like her sister the Galaxy.
Enjoy your cruise.

Ok, Ernst, if you insist. I will begin to try and enjoy this trip! It's almost time for the lifeboat drill sans lifejacket and then sailaway past Fort McHenry and under Key Bridge. Already started making good use of the non-alcoholic drink package I bought. Mercury will be missed. She is my favorite size ship. And she is quite lovely, almost as if I was just on here yesterday though it's been 10+ years ago.

Come on, it's not that these ships drop off the planet.
With some good will it is entirely possible for a non German speaking person to travel with these ships.

I know, for many from the U.S. this is 'way out there' but I can assure you that you do not have to be fluent in German to do that! You will certainly be able to communicate with the crew - not all are German anyhow and they certainly know how to communicate in English - beside that there will be enough passengers who speak English. All that should not be an issue with some basic travel experience (no, you don not have to be well traveled). There is no excuse for someone who is interested in ships to avoid 'German' ships.

The changes to Galaxy are of course a question of taste and whereas not cheaply executed and in some cases actually quite 'chic' for a cruise ship I do understand that they might go against the original design concept. However, this is not worse than other refits (probably it's actually MUCH better) and the change to TUI is certainly not a step down for these ships.

David, enjoy your trip! I haven't been on a cruise in 4 years so I truly understand how agonizing it must have been to wait that long to take a cruise! Enjoy your cruise and I look forward to your reveiw when you return.

For Ernst,

OK where do Americans book Mein Schiff?

What sort of pricing?

What does it offer that an American line in Europe does not?

Ask your travel agent or call TUI. In many cased I booked directly with the cruise line - it never was a problem. Yes, they do not advertise it in the U.S. but I am sure it's possible to book a cruise with them.

Well, they offer the ship(s) you seem to miss so much on the North American market.

One thing I am sure most people dont take into consideration when booking a cabin is whether the fog horn is going to keep them up all night! We hit some thick stuff outside Baltimore and it went on all night. Feel sorry for the folks in the Sky Suites, it must have been quite annoying.

My dining room table is one away from the very back of the ship and half way between centerline and port side. Like GALAXY there is a distinct vibration but at my table we can feel as well as hear a somewhat loud noise that sounds like a gigantic washing machine directly below our feet. Is that the actual propellor we or the propellor shaft?

Day 1 was a complete success! We are at sea (somewhere) and plowing bow first into some swells that seem to be forcing the water out of the main pool into two deck high geyers. Quite fun to watch!

We've hit a spot of bad weather this whole day. At noon we are 24 miles off of Cape Hatteras. Some of the Mercury crew are saying they havent seen it this bad in a while. Lucky us! The outter decks below the lifeboats are closed but I got some good pictures from there as well as my balcony. The spray is blowing up as high as Deck 10 and the length of the ship. Captain says it should get better after 7pm. Quite a few passengers are down from sea sickness. The ship is still plowing head first into these swells and shutters its length every few minutes.

Propellers can indeed make a noise like you described. The shaft itself is not a source for noise (but it's an important path for noise or vibration from the prop to the rest of the ship).

Thanks Ernst. We made it to Charleston SC before sunrise this morning an it is bitter cold with the wind chill up on deck. The oversplash from the jacuzzi's froze into sheets of ice and they have had to put out traffic cones to avoid falls. The weather yesterday deteriorated rapidly for about 4 of the 18 hours until it was nothing but a sea of white caps and foam spray 12 decks high. Got some cool pictures of green water peeling off the bow all the way from my balcony. The one thing that is all over the ship are hand sanitizer stations. They are everywhere as well as staff with large bottles walking around. They had several cases of people 'losing' their meals and had staff in what looked like Hazmat suits cleaning the 'spilage'.

So much for the Ocean Weather site which doesn't seem to show that rough a sea. But it does show the same seas for the Gulf of Mexico.
Usually the Carribean is very calm, but with all the storminess across the US.??????
Dave you might want to check out:

At least you will get an idea of what's ahead.

So glad you're enjoying your hard earned vacation! I sailed on MERCURY when she was brand new and very much enjoyed the experience. CENTURY, MERCURY, and GALAXY are very much ships on the human scale. Not too large or too small.

Today was 'Brunch', an opulent spread in the MDR center section complete with half a dozen ice sculptures and a huge and quite tasteful variety of food, including we are told some items not found on the normal dining room menu. One of the ice scultures was a female nude torso, quite well done I must say! It was superb, as are the weather conditions today, albeit overcast and still quite cool still for being halfway down the Florida coast. This ship is still just so amazing, and as Ernie said, the perfect size, not too big, not too small. She is a wonderful secret among the Celebrity fleet.
