Hi all,

I'll be sailing on a cruise from Fort Lauderdale later this month. I have pre- and post-hotel arrangement in FL, and would like to shoot some cruise ships in or departing from the port after I disembark. Just wonder are there any view points that are easy to access by taxi or walking? Is the security around the port strict? Thanks!

The Hilton and the Hotel W on Route A1A along the beach is a very good vantage point. Both have pools and bars on or abouts the 8th floor.

You can and should walk down to the end of the beach, and stand on the rocks to watch the ships sail out of Fort Lauderdale. It is by far the nicest and closest spot to see them.

I agree with Thad, I'd do that position too. Or get across from there to get the angle from the starboard sides of the ships. Either way you can't go wrong. I'm always looking for more interesting shots of DISCOVERY SUN and if I were down there. I'd get every angle of her that I could. Can't wait to see your photos HK Cruiser.

Yes, this is indeed a nice place to see the ships.

Here some
video clips of ships at 'Ft. Lauderdale' (Port Everglades). - most of them taken from this location (or the beach nearby).

HK Cruiser, yes, the best spot is on the south end of Ft. Lauderdale beach, there's were I got the pictures of Allure of the Seas in another thread and the ones on Ernst's and Thad's posts.

I wouldn't recommend you the south side of the inlet (John U. Lloyd State Park) because it might be somewhat difficult to get there for you. Also the view from the park is not very good since the Jetty is closed (but nobody tells you not to jump over ) and the views to the port are mostly poor due to there being Coast Guard facilities in the way.

There's also the 17th Street Causeway which is a pretty high bridge but it's pretty far from most ships except Princess; it is nice to see the ships on the turning basin though.

Don't forget to visit Miami if you get a chance, there's plenty of action here with Norwegian Epic, Celebrity Eclipse and Liberty of the Seas among others. The best place is South Point on South Beach or Watson Island which is currently under construction for the most park.

Here's a map that might help you, I wrote some notes to let you know the best places:

One other option is to take the Carrie B Harbour Cruise, which is a nice way to see the ships while they are at the docks and take some great pictures
