Actually it was October 4, 1980 when the ship caught fire.

I have a very good friend who now lives in Belgian and her late husband was one of the Officers on board. Her son who was only 5 at the time said he remembers it well. He now is an Officer on board a HAL ship - followed in his Father's foosteps & is an excellent Officer.

She actually finally sank on 10/11/80.

I am heading to Athens today to join Prinsendam for the voyage back to Fort Lauderdale. A much needed and past due Holiday.

I just found in my collection of brochures a 1981 mint condition brochure of her. If she were still around, she would have ended up with Louis or Thompson?? I'm thinking of putting this up for bids on Ebay.

Deborah I have the same brochure it's lovely and a testimony that she was special within the 1970's HAL fleet. She was the last Dutch cruise ship build fore the Holland America Line (at the same time the Cunard twins where also under construction in the Netherlands) And the first purpose build cruise ship fore HAL. The Nieuw Amsterdam/Noordam twins of 1983/84 where based on here design. Sadly the Merwede yard lost the order after the Dutch government refused a loan to build them.

Greetings Ben.

just to let you know I am now ready to build a fully detailed 1:1250 scale model of the Prinsendam, a really impressive small ship at her time.

I have a great little 1:1250 scale model of the Prinsendam I, shown here with the Nieuw Amsterdam (1983), which displays their design similarities.

Put the deck plans side by side and you will see that the N ships were just enlarged versions of the Prinsendam. They had almost identical lay out of their lounge decks.
