Absolutely NO, and I repeat NO Bermuda cruises out of New York in the summertime. I'm sailing with neophites - the Outer Boros, The Real Housewives, The Desperate Housewives, The Jersey Shore (Snookie and The Situation included) plus all the kids in the entire world ... and they're ALL in the pool!. Other than that we're having a great time :-)

Sounds like my 1998 Regal Empress Sunspree party summer cruise out of NYC.

It was the outer borough gold chain set.

The crowd was so loud that on the engine room tours the guides told them to shut up since they drowned out the sound of the machinery.

My Loveboat cruise out of NYC to Bermuda in July was not so bad.

I'm kind of surprised to see that from a HAL cruise as those are marketed a bit more upscale. Overall though that's new york, lol. I know that everybody is different and not everyone from new york is that way but in general sailing out of new york we've noticed more inward focused people than our florida sailings.

After MANY sailings to Bermuda I found the early season ones and the late ones are often child-free. It's risky to go once schools are closed for the summer. Try after Labor Day, much calmer, but not the seas.

Regarding the original quote: it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there will be more families on board when school is out. And to be miffed because a ship sailing out of NYC has a lot of New Yorkers and Jersey folk on board is just plain idiotic.

That's like someone being pissed because they went on MSC out of Venice and hated the fact that there were so many Europeans on board; or homophobes who go to Disney on Gay Day and have the nerve to complain about it.

Today, Holland America is more family friendly than ever; the enhanced children's facilities and programs, while nothing like a Camp Carnival or RCI's Adventure Ocean, are pretty impressive.

The person David quoted obviously didn't do their homework and I have no sympathy for them.

As NAL said, there are alternatives!

Dude thats such a small splinter faction of the Italian New York culture. I should know since I am and come from it. (Of course I have blond hair and blue eyes but thats a story for another time!). The media is blowing it way out of proportion and making it seem like everyone that is Italian and from the tri-state area is like that. Thank you MTV and Digg.

Shame. I, too, thought that crowd would by-pass HA, but I guess since they're already past cruisers under the Carnival umbrella, they've gone for the newbie out of NYC. Sorry guys, I warn people about cruising out of NY in the summer all the time. Gotta say Celebrity is the most normal crowd from my experience. My one and last cruise with NCL out of NYC was spent counting teeth at the bar and being glad I didn't jump in the pool after someone crapped in it. May 15-June 15 and September 1 on if you can. I suspect that a large part of the problem with the kids is there aren't the separate child/teen areas that you have on the newer, larger ships.

I cruised as a young child out of NYC. Even when Nixon was president and we had the likes of Olympia, and Rafaello, cruising is one of the best family vacations, especially with grandparents along.

I sailed QM2 out of NYC on July 4 and Labor day.
Linerguy was with me on the July 4. His children were wonderful and can understand his dismay with the OP.

Cunard with its nightly formal requirements filters out a lot of the vulgar sort. The kids on board were good for the most part. QM2 has a large teen center, child center, basketball court and many swimming pools. They were occupied and when kids are bored is when trouble begins.

NCL, Carnival and Princess are sold on price mostly and that is when the trailer park and prison populations get aboard.

Italians:
PS: I am partnered with an Italian American and have a great great uncle from Livorno, Italy. I grew up in the same town as NYCruiser and 80% of my graduating class had a last name that ended in a vowel. There are big divisions in the Italian American sub-culture from the uber-macho John Travolta, to the hard working tradesman who speaks like Chico Marx, and what is jokingly called the Jewish Italian: The soft-spoken be-spectacled ones who work as doctors, lawyers, and Indian Chiefs. I recall in my town that the parents of the academically smart Italians would not let them hang out with the greaser type Italians.

You know I betcha its just due to school being out. I guess other than NCL the rest of the Bermuda trade would probably be similar price. HAL and Celebrity I can see being similar and RCI is only 5 nights.
As soon as Sept hits, it will be the typical grey-hairs.

If you don't want this crowd, then jack up the prices on HAL.

Can you imagine if CCL entered the market and under cut NCL on prices? The guests on that......

Thank you David. I am proud that my children are well versed in what's acceptable and what's not.

When we first started cruising with our children, we sat them down and told them three basic rules:

1. Always say please, thank you, you're welcome and excuse me.

2. People who work on the ship are in no way lower than you are and deserve the same respect you would give your parents, grandparents or teachers.

3. Show respect for your fellow passengers. Always say hello when passing someone in the hallway, hold open doors for others and, most importantly, understand that, at your age, you are VERY lucky to be experiencing something as wonderful as a cruise so, DON'T BLOW IT!

Nine cruises later, they have it down pat.

BTW, David, my daughter just graduated from High School...can you believe it?!

David.....being an Italian American from the same town you grew up in you segmented the Italian Americans to a tea! Part of my family falls into the Jewish Italian segment. Thats where I fit in and the other half is the greaser type tending to their cars and fake tans. While I am not a doctor I am a teacher. I know I am stereotyping here but its true!

When start people to look at them self in the mirror. I have a big problem with people who write and post such warnings about other people. They must have a sad and empty life's of them self.

Russ, congrats on your daughter's graduation. Interested in her college plans.

Ben,

We are not talking ethnicity or physical limitation, but a learned pattern of behavior which is easy to change.

problem with the Veendam and any other ship sold on price in the summertime is you get passengers who are loud, and have uncouth children. This is in conflict with those who are quiet and want a serene vacation. HAL is marketed as a senior citizens line with a sedate clientele and the OP did not have that experience. Carnival? If I were to sail would have the expectation of a party cruise and not be upset.

I parallel Ernie's sentiments to the NYC Veendam.
It seems like an epidemic.

It would be great as a luxury mini-get away. Perhaps some people that enjoy a long weekend away at the Four Seasons or Ritz would be interested? I know I would. These sailings may also attract those that can't afford a longer luxury cruise, but perhaps once they get a taste of the "good life" they might save up for a longer luxury cruise. Right now the only choices for short cruises are on mass-market lines. Disney is probably the most upscale in the short cruise market, and they are priced almost at the luxury level.
