I believe Epic has now started her first 'proper' cruise? She must be at one of the Caribbean islands today?

Any images?

She is in St. Maarten today all by her lonesome. There is a pretty good live shot of her, which you can access at the following link.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) she will be in STT with Celebrity Solstice. Should be an interesting comparison.

Is she using the Oasis modular scanning stations? It looks like she may be in the webcam.

Good question. I wonder?

It would be a real kick in the face to EPIC passengers if these air conditioned scanning stations were locked up, and everyone has to stand in line outside under the sun.

My understanding was that RCI and the port authorities co-developed these for RCI's exclusive use. I don't have confirmation on that though.

Essentially EPIC could use them in Nassau and St Maarten. To my knowledge no other ships use them except OASIS and soon ALLURE. I'm sailing on NORWEGIAN SKY next weekend and we will dock in Nassau. I'll try to see if any other ships are using them.

Nice webcam grabs.

Neither ship is what I would call a beauty, but they are both interesting looking ships.

One thing they share is an angular design. You are hard pressed to find a curve on either ship.

On the interior, SOLSTICE is about as close to my personal taste in decor as a ship can get. Her design just blew me away. I can't speak for EPIC yet as I haven't sailed her, but she is up against some pretty tough competition.

THANKS! I think I was surprised by this webcam grab the most, considering the perspective of the shot and the ships distance from each other, that EPIC didnt seem that much larger than the SOLSTICE which I guess in reality they arent GRT-wise?

Even in Miami, EPIC didn't seem that much larger than CARNIVAL LIBERTY.

I think once ships get this big (over 100,000 gt), an extra 20,000-50,000 gt doesn't make much difference in appearance.

Even OASIS, which is substantially larger than EPIC didn't blow me away when I first saw her (not like QM2). It's when you see the width of OASIS that you realize how enormous she is.

Overall, QM2 still looks the largest, most powerful, and most imposing to me.

As has already been said, it is her width that makes her the biggest.

Are Epic and Oasis ever likely to meet?

Very true, although in the pictures shown in this thread you can see she is pretty damn tall too! The top of the Carnival funnel is at the height of the Viking Crown Lounge on OASIS. Perhaps she doesn't always appear so tall because she is so wide?

I never noticed how much the Epic and Solstice class look alike. Both have the same angular curves to there balconies and both have a substantial dark glass structure above the bridge. The difference is that on Solstice it is smaller and angled back nicely. Over all though they even appear to be the same size which amazes me. When I saw her in NYC I didn't think she was huge (been on Oasis and Liberty) but she certainly seemed to be a large ship. Solstice has an ability to appear larger than she is though. When she was docked in line with the Carnival Dream i thought she looked larger yet there is a good difference between the two.

Thanks - so it's Nassau today! Is there a web cam image?

News Release, 16 July 2010

NORWEGIAN EPIC SETS BOOKING RECORDS

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and most innovative ship launches with record breaking booking sales for the past two weeks.

Norwegian Epic has set record-breaking booking levels for the past two weeks on the heels of successful inaugural activities in Southampton, Rotterdam and the USA.

The booking volume for the week ending July 3, 2010 and following the UK inaugural event in Southampton was the second highest this year, surpassed only last week when the ship launched to customers and agents in New York and Miami.

Media exposure during the inaugural activities and positive reviews from both travel partners and media are helping to fuel the demand.

“Now we have showcased Norwegian Epic and she has been so well received by all, we are more than pleased with the record-breaking booking volumes for this incredible new ship,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.

“Given the trends so far this week, we expect the booking volumes to continue and we may even break another record this week.”

The one sole webcam, and it just happens to be at the largest, most expansive resort hotel complex in Nassau (and you think they could afford one that actually works), has been out of order for the better part of the last year. It was operational for about a week when OASIS first came on the scene, then went offline again. Very dissapointing.

On this sailing I dont think anybody is quick with anything! It's been unusually quiet for the last 6 days of this her inaugural Caribbean, especially after the barrage of day by day, minute to minute updates of her first 22 days and 5 sailings.

NCL should thank all of us for posting comments good and bad about Epic. Seems like this ship has had more publicity than any other ship even Oasis.
