A small fire broke out last night aboard NORWEGIAN EPIC, but was confined to an area of wiring near the galley. The ship is still expected to be delivered on schedule, June 15th.

It wasn't a small fire. 1200 m2 of the four's deck has burnt.

Currently, STX have do no declaration about the delivery date. But, when i read the french's articles in newspaper i think that there many works to do to repear. Some deck's steel must be changed.

You can find some pictures about the engine changed this week on

Is it me or does NCL seem to have especially bad luck? I think back to PRIDE OF AMERICA, NORWAY, NORWEGIAN DREAM, and some other instances that seem to happen to NCL. It just seems like more negative happens to them compared to most other lines.

I think that NCL just garners more bad press, plus the fact that EPIC is so big and becoming more topical right about now. There have been newbuilding fires and delays with other lines (Princess had a major one which actually caused them to switch ships and names) but those incidents had about 15 minutes of fame and just went away.

Well I haven't seen any photos of huge flames everywhere and read everything from lots to little damage. It's only in the news as she is new and topic of the month. In 'good company' with all the other under construction fires; it's not just NCL or STX - WESTERDAM, COSTA FORTUNA, DIAMOND PRINCESS [became SAPPHIRE], Voyager of the Seas and many more I expect.

Westerdam's was huge and did not delay her.

Interested to see some pictures of how big it really was. Fires during new builds don't mean much and often times the pictures make them look worse than they really are. The Voyager of the Seas had a fire and was delivered on time. I believe one of the freedom class as well (possibly Liberty) but never got delayed. We'll have to wait and see but I wouldn't jump to nay conclusions as it often seems to amount to not much.

Wasn't there also a small fire on Oasis when she was being built?

This sort of thing isn't limited to cruise ships either. Emma Maersk had a pretty extensive bridge fire during construction, which I understand didn't impede delivery.

The point's already well-made anyway. Just because we all wish STX would declare the ship a total fire loss and, in a pinch to deliver something to NCL, stumble upon the original blueprints to the SS France in a basement and use those to build a replacement, doesn't mean it's going to happen.

With that said, I still think Epic deserves an open mind.

LMAO. Just about lost my lunch on that. Funny stuff and well put.

Be very careful though, the last time I mentioned external appearances didnt matter I was accused of wearing ugly clothes, living in a ugly house, and driving an ugly car.

Yep, that one was really small though. They said the ship being evacuated during that time caused larger delays than the actual fire.

Not really a surprise when when sees all the welding going on and wiring with in the inards of the ship. An electrical short probably caused the fire. The replacement of wiring takes time.

Actually, no. Choosing my residence, attire, and car are completety different than choosing a vacation on a ship based on its exterior appearance. I choose a ship based on a number of things, one of which is its interior appearance and comfort, of which I am sure most CT members agree is much more important than what a ship looks like on the outside. There are a very few holdouts though here on CT that still refuse to cruise a ship because it is 'ugly'.

I was actually hoping they would use the Normandie's design as a replacement.

Today's cruise market demands something bigger. I propose they build Normandie's planned-but-never realized big sister ship, the Bretagne. The time is right!

(Then again, what do I know? I wished Cunard would have used those old aborted Q3 plans for the new Queen Elizabeth. She'd have been a real stunner, I swear! )

The Norwegian Epic in dry dock form Joubert
Credits: BERNARD Biger - STX FRANCE

The fire may be arson, occurred on the ship near completion on the night of Monday to Tuesday, has caused great damage. If the shell is not affected, significant damage was observed on the wiring. At five weeks of the delivery of Norwegian Epic, the shipyards in Saint-Nazaire are engaged in a race against time to prevent the accident would delay the delivery. The direction of STX France has launched a "commando raid" in three weeks to repair the damage. "The damage is concentrated in a technical area at the rear of the deck 4. The structure of the ship was not damaged. The main damage is located in the cables. The replenishment of equipment are introduced with fewer delays. To date, we estimate that we can rehabilitate the area by late May / early June, "stated this Thursday the manufacturer. The second round of sea trials the ship, already delayed after a ship's diesel engine was severely damaged on March 26, would be postponed until early June, shortly before the filing date of the liner to the company NCL. In Saint-Nazaire, where 2,200 people work on the "C33" is holding its breath. "It's a real challenge," says Will it work sites. Despite this new hazard, STX France maintains the delivery date to June 15

A malicious act causing the fire?

Yesterday evening, the site announced its decision to file a complaint against persons unknown after the fire that hit a technical bridge 4. Following the findings on board by firefighters and police authorities, the public prosecutor of Saint-Nazaire has taken the initiative to appoint an expert to initiate a police investigation. "It became apparent that certain elements observed and information gathered allowed to express any doubt about the accidental nature of the fire. The coincidence of the decommissioning of the sprinkler system (Hi Fog) with the outbreak of the fire, in the absence of any work by hot spot nearby, prompts us to consider the hypothesis of an act of malevolence. Pending the findings of the investigation, ongoing investigations will not allow us to advance us more about the assumptions behind the fire, "said STX France.

For the record, the fire broke out Monday around 23 hours. Once the alert was given, the vessel was evacuated, 200 people working now on board. The firemen managed to extinguish the fire until Tuesday at 2:00 in the morning.

Mer et Marine is reporting a further, potentially suspicious, fire.

A new outbreak of fire occurred last Friday on board the Norwegian ship Epic (C33), being completed in Saint-Nazaire. The fire, which broke out late in the day in a dumpster on a bridge outside the ship, has been quickly discovered by chance and off. After the accident occurred on the night of May 3 to 4, the suspicion on the accidental nature of this new fire starts. A week ago, a first fire developing in a technical bridge 4, had caused significant damage to cables, requiring major repairs prior to delivery of C33, scheduled for mid-June Following the initial findings, the trail of a malicious act has been raised. The office of Saint-Nazaire has opened an investigation and the sites have filed a complaint against X.
Currently, more than 2,200 people work at the completion of the Norwegian Epic, a behemoth 329 feet long and 153,000 tons, with 2109 cabins and suites.
