And the Godmother of Nieuw Amsterdam is …
Julie | April 26th, 2010

Holland America Line revealed today that Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands will name Nieuw Amsterdam in Venice, Italy, July 4, 2010.

Nieuw Amsterdam IV will be the 11th Holland America Line vessel launched by a member of the Dutch Royal Family. Previous ship dedications include ss Statendam III in 1929 by Prince Hendrik and ss Nieuw Amsterdam II in 1937 by Queen Wilhelmina. Then-Crown Princess Beatrix christened ss Statendam IV in 1957 as well as the ms Prinses Margriet in 1964. The ss Rotterdam V was launched in 1958 by Queen Juliana. Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet dedicated ms Prinsendam II in 1973, ms Nieuw Amsterdam III in 1983, ms Rotterdam VI in 1997 and ms Oosterdam in 2003. Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands served as ms Eurodam’s godmother in 2008.

Princess Máxima was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, May 17, 1971, as Máxima Zorreguieta. She was engaged to His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange, March 30, 2001. On Feb. 2, 2002, Máxima wed Prince Willem-Alexander, who is Her Majesty Queen Beatrix’s eldest child and first in line of succession to the throne. Upon her marriage, Máxima received the title Princess of the Netherlands.

Since October 2004, Princess Máxima has been a member of the Council of State, the Netherlands’ most important government advisory body. Princess Máxima represents the Royal House at official occasions, often accompanying Prince Willem-Alexander. She also accompanies Her Majesty Queen Beatrix on state visits. The princess passed her baccalaureate examinations at Northlands School in 1988 and graduated with an economics degree from Universidad Católica Argentina in 1995.

In 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon designated Princess Máxima as his Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development.

Princess Máxima advises the Secretary-General on access to financial services and works to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to all forms of financial service. At the invitation of the United Nations, Princess Máxima was involved in the Advisors Group to the International Year of Microcredit 2005. Throughout 2005 the Group met on a regular basis to discuss progress towards achieving universal access to financial services.

She has worked at Boston Securities SA in Buenos Aires, the European Union Representative Office of Deutsche Bank in Brussels and in New York at Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and HSBC James Capel Inc.

Making the Signature-class a real Royal class. As you remember that sister MS EURODAM was dedicated by HM Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.

This will be the 3th Nieuw Amsterdam that have a Royal Godmother HM Queen Wilhelmina, TSS NIEUW AMSTERDAM 1938, HRH Princess Margriet MS NIEUW AMSTERDAM 1983.

I'm feeling very proud, Ben.

hi there

i happen to think that HAL nowadays is pretty
much an american business

and Maxima is from Argentina and chosen by
Willem Alexander with the knowledge of her
father's activities.. which is something
i would never be proud of...

further you could argue the legitimacy of the
royal family in the 21st century

b regards
b. Joe

I suppose you leave that to the ones who actually live in a monarchy themselves.
Friday I'll be back in Amsterdam for Queensday (When Queen Beatrix celebrates here birthday) and as long as the whole crowd walks around in orange all day there is nothing to worry about.

Don't talk about things you do not understand.... leave it to the Dutch, Norwegians. Swedes, Danes, Spanish, Belgiums and British themselves to judge

I suppose Maxima, being the most popular Royal of them all to be the perfect candidate..... rather unfortunately the ship will be so tacky... and American...

to be continued I suppose....

Just asking the main question: What did your father do during the war ?
If he was a member of NSB, do we have to blame you ? ?

The majority of the Dutch do not argue the legitimacy of the Royal Family.

hi Willem

finally that question i was suspecting coming up

well one of my grandfathers was with the resistance the other one indeed was member of the nsb and
went fighting for the german army in russia

however my father and mother did not inherite
royal functions at all, they were poor

to set an example as a royal family member it
is not good taste to marry a daughter's mass murderer (is it???)
or shall i say Maxima's father never killed someone didn't he?
worse he was in charge as a member of
this Argentinian horrified government...

ofcourse our lovely Maxima is not to blame
or responsible... if there is someone it is
Willem Alexander for consciously knowing
and choosing his spouse

if you are aware that politicians and people
in charge are dismissed for less...

and your final remark that the majority of the dutch
seem to conscent with the royal family that
in itself is a fact, but not an argument
(as i said before 95% of the people are stuoid)

furthermore i just put up the question that you can debate the legitimacy of the monarchy
to sponsor the wealthiest family, when the
national goverment has to find money anywhere
is highly questionable

and for oslo dutch... hmm well i don't think
i have anything to say.... i hope you
will find your way through the garbage tomorrow....

(there is a strike going on)

regards
b. Joe

Quite something fore some one with Budha in his name!

I was a bit afraid this would happen after you're initial post. I don't want to start a argument. But I have to say this.

I think it's horrible to blame Prince Willem Alexander fore what happened in Argentina and the role his father in law played in Junta regime. I think it's terrible and as grandson of a man who was member of the NSB (Dutch nazi party) you must know how it was fore one of you're parents and the hostile and hate they experienced after WW2.

My father a victim of the nazi's (he was deported after a razzia in Rotterdam and forced to work in Germany) Always teach us not to blame children or other family members. They the kids could not hold responsible fore the action of there parents........

The whole discussion about Princess Maxima father is done in a relative small group of left thinking people. Forced on the majority of the Dutch. Well that majority closed here in there harts and not blame here fore things done by here father (and it's not clear what he have done or not done)

I'm not always happy how the royal couple performed lately. But to blame them both fore what happened in Argentina is very wrong.

And the strike is not there wrong doing before you start suggesting that.
