Due to a mechanical problem, STX Europe must changed one of the six diesel engine before the last sea trial.

Norwegian Epic will enter in drydock the 12 april for different works and the remplacement.

Currently, the delivery date is not changed : 15 june 2010.

When they say replace, does this mean they cut open the ship and extract the old one, or simply take it apart and likwise, reassemble a new engine in its place?

Yes, the shipyard will cut the hull to extract and replace the engine. It already do a similar job onboard Millenium.

I think that the next trial (near mid april) will be delayed but, STX said not the delivery date.

Another bad new about STX on this ship.

Norwegian Epic is the biggest cruise ship built by STX Europe Saint-Nazaire and, currently the last. MSC Cruises must confirm a firm order by some weeks for a new 135 000 tons called MSC Favolosa (Costa and MSC are in war about the name of Favolosa)

If the hull needs to be cut open to remove the engine, this job sounds like a headache. In the Millennium class ships, the new generator set was added directly inboard of the ship's side. With the Epic, the engines are on the ship's centerline, and I think there are two longitudinal bulkheads on each side between the main engine room and the ship's side, with auxiliary machinery occupying these outboard compartments. All of this and the associated piping and wiring would have to be removed to get to the engine.

I have heard the next name after FAVOLOSA is COSTA FACINOSA or something along those lines. When I read that I instantly thought of Carnival. Costa is more and more like Carnival every day.

The humorous side is that these style ships were once thought to appeal only to those "tacky Americans". It seems the Europeans have embraced them quite nicely.

They only appeal to 'tacky Europeans'.

From www.urbandictionary.com on Eurotrash

1] Self-aggrandizing Europeans who condescend Americans, yet consume massive amounts of American culture and appropriate it as their own

2] uncultured European nativists

3] Europeans visiting America who boast of wealth, fame, and nobility, while in truth, have none of such things.

4] A European that is a self-proclaimed post-modern intellectual and sports a self-perpetuating ego to suit. Classier-than-thou.

5] Definition used by ignorant ugly and particularly fat European descent who now call themselves Americans, to overcome their colony complex

6] A certain wild and unpredictable style. Very chic and stylish. A free spirit who will not be influenced by others.

NOTE The opinions expressed here are NOT my own. Anyone offended or concerned should post a rebuttal on
the urban dictionary site

I can relate to #6. It's very common in gay American culture when you see someone (who is obviously European) dressed a little crazy to think aloud with your friends .... "is he gay or just Eurotrash"? It's hard to tell sometimes. LOL.

We are being bad but this is all in good fun. No harm intended.

"Eurotrash" is a pretty unambiguous term. It generally refers to downmarket Europeans in the US, and is fairly misogynistic because it's most commonly used on women.

Amy Winehouse: Eurotrash.
Juliette Binoche: Not Eurotrash.

OK, back on track:

It's not uncommon. They had to cut QE2's hull open to replace the "Echo" (i.e. #5) engine after a rod punctured the crankcase. I've heard QE2 leaked more near the end of her career, but I wonder if this is related at all.

Fortunately in QE2's case Echo engine was located immediately adjacent to the side shell, so they didn't have to remove any other engines to get to Echo. Epic's engines are divided between two engine rooms, with three engines in each engine room. I'm not sure if Epic's faulty engine is outboard or centerline, but either way it won't be as convenient as QE2's Echo engine. Whereas QE2's engine rooms spanned the entire beam of the ship, the much wider Epic has auxiliary machinery space outboard of the engines, with longitudinal watertight bulkheads between the centerline engine room and the outboard spaces. I wouldn't worry about leaks from cutting open the hull. QE2's leaks came from deteriorating piping.
