Yesterday I took advantage of my South Florida locale and enjoyed some ship spotting atop the 17th Street drawbridge in Ft. Lauderdale. The picture quality is not great because these were taken with my iPhone. It was a fun way to spend the late afternoon and it was a beautiful day.

Yes, it was a beautiful day in Port Everglades--I spent much of it aboard EURODAM, but felt drawn to keep viewing the ships around me. It was a "full house" at the port!

My favourite pre-cruise Fort Lauderdale hotel was the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 until they closed their revolving rooftop bar and restaurant. The views of the port were exceptional from there! I still stay there but rooms in the "Tower" are not cheap.

This coming weekend (20th) and next month on the 8th you'll have 8 ships on port, one more than this past Saturday. On the 27th/28th you'll have 14 ships pass through. And in 6 weeks most will be headin for their Summer destinations.

Excellent photos indeed. I'd love to be there at that bridge to watch the wonderful, older DISCOVERY SUN depart and arrive there. Wished I was down there.

Just how many cruise ships can dock here at one time?. Seems like Miami will not be a home port for most cruise lines I assume this one will.

Here's a cool site Joe posted a while back, some pictures showing Port Everglades with 'full houses'. My favorites are #5 with 10 ships, #6, #8, and #26 with 9 ships each. If you click on the small picture it'll give you the large version and it makes a great computer wallpaper. It also shows very well the proximity of the FLL airport to the port. I think 10 would be the most ships the port could hold based on different sizes/tonnage.

Port Everglades hosted 15 ships on December 21 2003 including COSTA ATLANTICA, COSTA MEDITERRANEA, GRAND PRINCESS, INFINITY, MAASDAM, MILLENNIUM, OOSTERDAM, RADIANCE OF THE SEAS, REGAL EMPRESS, SUN PRINCESS and VOLENDAM, plus the two day-cruisers DISCOVERY SUN and ISLAND ADVENTURE. There were also two others whose names I don't know.

This is my favorite also. We wtill be staying here again in May before our Oasis cruise.

We stayed across the street last time at the Hilton Marina and it's not the hotel that it used to be when Marriott owned it.

Ernie, great shots as always. Thanks for posting. Lucky you living down there in sunny Florida. I hope to one day move back down there when I retire. Are you in Miami or FLL?

Technically Miami, but we are in North Miami-Dade so it's just as easy for us to get to South Beach as Ft. Lauderdale. We are right in between.

Dont forget the Queen Mary 2 is coming back through on April 12th at the tail end of her World Cruise. She'll be the only one in port that day.

That would be fun to see QM2 on 4/12 in Ft. Lauderdale, then I will be boarding her on 4/22 in Southampton.

I finally live in the cruise capital of the world, and what do I do? Take an 8 hour flight to pick up a ship. What is wrong with this picture?

Now that is funny. Quite a coincidence! Enjoy your cruise on her. I am jealous! I see the 2011/2012 Cunard voyage books open up on April 27th, maybe I can finally afford to get back on her next year.

Ernie, I've dealt with that for 30 years--I'll be on a cruise in the Med, or Alaska, or South America, and someone will say "You live in Miami? Don't they have cruises from there?" Duh!

Speaking of Port Everglades Ship Photos....

Then answer to last week's Cruise News trivia question about where the original Queen Elizabeth spent time between 1968 and 1971 was Port Everglades/Ft Lauderdale and the reader who submitted the first correct answer also submitted two photos he took back in 1970.

Here are links to the photos:

Thanks to Peter Stafford for sharing.
