Latest news on www.wearecunard.com shows QE(3) nearly ready for her float out.

I've also updated her area on my site: http://chriscunard.com/about-QE.htm to include a new video from Alistair Greener.

There does appear to be a distinct lack of interest in this ship.
Floated out now , but who cares.

It's not really news as there is another one in service already!

As for 'unique decor' the public rooms in the renderings still look remarkably similar to the Queen Vic's, even if they have changed the carpet.

She was actually floated out on 5th Jan, before Chris made his post. Apart from a few tweaks, colours and sports area - what is different? She looks the same from the exterior as QV. Things seem very low key.
Bigger news seems to be 30 people on QV with Norovirus [bigger news than all the hospitals in the UKwith many wards closed all over, suffering from the same, no visitors either in some places].

We are posting a page of transfer images to MaritimeMatters, taken by Maurizio Eliseo:

http://maritimematters.com/QEtransfer.html

Maybe the low profile is because painting the ship in Cunard colors is still not finished?

I love Cunard but I really hate that they are getting this ship. It looks horrible! It doens't deserve to be name Queen Elizabeth. Its a beefed up QV meets Eurodam . Just my opinion.

I said the same thing about the QV before she was finished, she has turned out to be a great looking ship IMHO, the question is then, can Cunard do it twice ?

Looks like Carnival took a decent looking ship (QV) and ruined the profile w/that structure above the bridge and the beefed-up stern. I can see where the increased tonnage is on that ship. Ashame that such a historic name-attached to two beautiful Cunarders is now on this mess.

.. but how much criticism did they come under at the time when they were first launched?

In 40 years time, when the next QE is launched [or maybe 20, will a Vista last 40? ] people will probably be saying how beautiful the Vista versions were.

Maybe... but how often do we look at skyscrapers built in the 1970 and think ""wow that's pretty"... despite what we build today, sometimes ugly is ugly.

I don't think anything short of a duplicate copy of the original QE floating out of a builders dock would have made some of our liner-o-philes happy.

She looks fine to me.

What is that thing around the radar mast, is that fore wind protection or part of a extra deck? It looks kind of out of place even on a signature vessel?

Greetings Ben.

No, but the Cunard brand is supposed to be a cut above the rest and it can't all be down to the interior. It's another Lego ship.

Ben, the ship is going to have a glass enclosed games area on deck 11. I am not sure what it is going to look like when finished, but the first thing I thought of when I looked at the pics was EPIC! We will have to wait and see, though.

Thanks Michael, it's a strange structure that is out of line with the rather good looks of this class of ships....... Indeed wait and see.

Greetings Ben.

blah, blah, blah...I had a great time on the QV and the QM2, and I expect I'll have a great time on QE. I am happy that Cunard is still around and they are getting new tonnage.

I seriously doubt that. The quality of design took a step down in the 1970s w/cost cutting. I'll use automobiles as an example. Here in the states many car collector events won't allow cars produced after 1975. That was the 'magic year' that cars were no longer considered worthy of classic/collectable status. I may not agree w/that completely but many organizations stick to it.

The last 'classic' passenger ship built was most likley Vistafjord and today she is considered by many among the last of the sleek beauties-even w/alterations to her upper decks. The mass-produced boxes of today may become beloved by some (hey, there are people who think a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are beautiful) but I (and apparently others) no longer have the passion we had for ships that we had 10-15 years ago. I don't swoon over say a 2010 Nissan or most modern boxboats . When the QV made her maiden L.A. visit a few years ago. I did'nt even bother making the trip down to see her as I had done many times over the years to see QE2, Rotterdam V and even the lovely Disney ship. Why bother, I saw plenty of Vistas models anchored in Mexico a few week prior.

With that beefed-up stern and structure over the bridge, it may be difficult. A lovely (or even decent) design can of course be completely ruined when tinkered with slightly. God is in the details and if those are'nt correct, you can have a mess on your hands.

I would have been fine w/a QV copy. That ship (though no true beauty) is decent looking. Exterior design is'nt important to many people (look around and see what people drive, wear and live in). Attractive well-proportioned design cost more $$$ and most cruise lines simply don't want to spend the money on it today.

Interesting view of the QE here. I like the semicircular dome over the Winter Garden, but the new supports for the sports deck "roof" over the bridge are too tall.

Exactly. The average person won't even notice that but it does give her a slight NCL Epic look forward. It called designing from the inside-out.

Exactly. The ship is hideous, an offense to the eyes an all that Cunard represents, and I would never sail on her she is just ugly. Horrible stupid boat builders, what where they thinking?

It'll be alright. I am sure a year from now we will have forgotten all about this 'debate' and will be laying praise and accolades on the new Disney Dream. Then all of our ship design buffs will have something to swoon over again...

Some of us appreciate proper proportions and good design.

There's a great scene in 'The Devil Wears Prada' that sums up an appreciation of good design-in fashion. In it, Miranda attempts to explain (and educate) her new employee Andrea who in the end still never seems to get 'it'. Most people don't.

I can appreciate architecture and art from every century and continent, fine wine and gourmet cuisine from around the world, exotic and antique cars, a beautiful woman in stunning fashion, a classic movie, an overture, brilliantly written literature, prose and poetry. But not every thing can be at the top of its game, the best of its category, otherwise we would live in a world of indifference to that which deserves a greater appreciation.

Looks are not important to me. I could care less if I took a cruise on an ugly ship. As long as it has good value, food, entertainment, etc. Yes she is a Vista, but seriously are Vistas that bad looking? They are quite attractive. Most of us are going on Epic right? Not for her looks, or design but for the array of things she offers. So all i'm saying is, all of this anger/bitterness about another Vista is kind of silly.
