She probably just had a fairly rough crossing, and the deadlights were closed, a standard procedure.

If you look at this photo in "full size" it might be a bit clearer that they're plated over. It is surprisingly difficult to see these in photos of the ship but then all we are looking at is some bead welding!
Compare with this photo of CARONIA which shows what they looked like before they were plated over, with deadlights closed.

I first noticed this when visiting her a few years back and noticed she was drawing something like 29 feet!
Apparently she has had quite a lot of ballast added ... I think this is to comply with new stability regulations.
It is too bad that Saga did not move her boot top up a bit as it is really too low now.
That sheer makes for interesting cabins. Our cabin on the Rose was well forward, on the sheer. The cabin floor sloped & so did the furniture, with a fairly large triangular gap under the door!
