I haven't seen this mentioned yet on CT, but Royal Caribbean has announced another innovative "first at sea" for the OASIS: a cupcake shop. Designer cupcakes have been a fad or trend over the past couple of years, and now guests can purchase them on board. Seems a bit superfluous in addition to all of the food choices included already in the cruise, but I guess people will pay for anything!

See here:
Cupcakes at Sea

By the way, for our friends in the UK, I believe you call these "fairy cakes."

Other ships might not have a cupcake shop but at least one does not have to pay for cakes.

US Cupcakes are UK Fairy Cakes with buttercream icing piled on top. It depends on if one has US or UK buttercream icing whether they are passable to eat or not

UK Cupcakes are flat iced with a thick layer of fondant or otherwise.

Would I buy one? No.. but seems these are all the rage in the US so perhaps people will? I thought we were all supposed to be eating 5 pieces of fruit a day, not cakes

It not really cupcakes but donuts in the US! We have Dunkin Donuts--OK and Crispy Creames--(I don't like these-to greasy and sweet).
I'm not a cake eater but do like pies(apple and cherry).
I would NOT pay for the cupcakes either!!

What no koeksoeter ! Again discrimination against South Africans. They are lekker (nice).

Basically a strip of donut dough, folded in half a plaited around each other, deep fried and then soaked in syrup. Koeksoester = Cake sister.

Or Vetkoek - balls of sour dough, deep fried and filled with curried mince. Vetkoek = Fat cakes.

Fridge tart - biscuit base, sweetener condensed milk and grenadilla (or other) on top - sets in fridge.

They could have a SA shop with biltong (raw, spiced dried meat pieces or chunks) etc !!

Well maybe not - but some day would be great, home from home.

Why would they make you pay for cupcakes? Why do they even have a cupcake resturant? Doesnt make sense. Why should guests have to pay for this? One more charge/fee.

For our non american members, this is a typical "upscale" US cupcake, from Magnolia Bakery in NYC in this case..

Cam, nearly every ship these days has some sort of patisserie or pastry shop on board (usually goes along with their coffee bars) and these things are extra charge. I could never understand the urge to buy this stuff when you could go right up to the Lido and get coffee and sweets for free. But apparently enough people do (possibly kids and people with eating disorders!)

The cupcake trend is quite big on the East Coast, although I would think that extravagance has died down with the poor economy. A few years ago the trend was for designer muffins. Someone suggested a donut shop, which seems like it would have more widespread appeal.

My problem with it is that they already have a pastry shop onboard so why do they really need to make another. Maybe just for bragging rights.

Of Course!! These are corporations and they need things to promote just as you posted (on another post) that the Carnival Dream will have a light show....why? So that they may say....The Carnival Dream boast a light show and she is the only cruise ship in North America to d so...... and I am sure at the light show they will be selling some sort of paraphernalia that has something to do with that show like mini laser light thingies.

All lines do this: NCL created the White Hot Night Party so they can sell angel wings and special drinks with lights in them and RCI has created all these neighborhoods on Oasis so that they may build revenue generating things to fill them with like a cupcake place!

At the end of the day it is all business and keeping that "competitive advantage". I remember learning that term when I got my business degree. I remember a professor of mine said competitive advantage is one of the blood lines of a comapanies pathway to success.

All mass maket lines always want to increase that onboard revenue.

Here's a picture of the original cupcakes to be served on Oasis of the Seas (fresh ones of course). The picture is from the STX media day.

I don't understand why the cupcakes would be pay. Didn't they say that the donut shop was free? Also the cupcakes are just small pieces of cake and located right across from a cafe serving free cookies and cakes.

Sweetened condensed milk is just that, milk which has been condensed with half or more of its water evaporated off. Pile in the sugar, it caramelises a bit and you end up with a creamy sticky looking syrupy goo which comes in a can and keeps forevermore. It has many uses and these days comes in various forms without the sugar, low fat etc.. but I guess Jetwet1 is referring to the original which was used in bygone years as a nutritional supplement for undernourished children [war time rations]. Various dessert/sweet recipes use it, caramel shortbread slices etc. Other versions can be watered down and used as milk if no fresh is available, or used as is in tea/coffee etc but only if you have a sweet tooth.

I suppose you could add a bit of colouring and swirl it over some cake adding a few sprinkles - but would probably run off

Pam

I actually knid of like the idea. Not that I would go and buy a cupcake for sure if I were on Oasis but thee is something kind of cozy about the idea of a shop the specilizes in cupcakes.

Durring a resent visit back home my cousin took me to one of these cupcake shops in Pasadena. Kind of interesting, I never even knew it was there.

Cupcakes can be quite profitable. Here in L.A. we have Sprinkles in Beverly Hills and a few other high-end specialty cupcake bakers. These are gourmet cakes and priced that way.

I think it's a fad but these high-end shops are still quite popular. For our UK friends, they don't offer a fruitcake version.

Upscale cupcake shops are very popular here. I buy one about once a month. My friends with kids tell me that they are all the rage for bithday parties. It get's pretty expensive though, as a dozen are around $30.

Nothing wrong with fancy cupcakes - more the contrary - and I understand why one want's to mimic the ambience of a cupcake shop aboard a ship like Oasis. The only thing that is odd for me is that one has to pay for it. For me food used to be included in a cruise vacation. I know, this isn't the case anymore for a long, long time now but it's still odd for me.

they lok like muffins, but i guess they are smaller.

I guess "cupcakes" are really "petit-fours" very small cakes, made with the most differing thins-gs, to be eaten with the coffee after a meal ?

I don't see why it should have an extra shop ???

Cupcakes are generally found at parties, especially childrens parties and in the young school grades it is a popular thing that kids bring in on their Birthdays.

During the last years cupcakes have become "gormet" their are someplaces in NYC that have cupcake shops and even outside NYC in the suburbs by me whe have trendy cupcake and cookie shops. I think its silly but they look yummy! I was at a wedding a year ago in NYC and they had a cupcake wedding cake! And every guest received a cupcake to eat rather than a slice of cake!
