On the contrary, the US team made it to the quarter-finals in 2002, the same result as England. They didn;t do so well in 2006, however. As regards the tournament in South Africa next year, the US team seems to be well on the way towards qualification.

Let us not forget that the USA was ranked in FIFA's top 10 shortly before the last World Cup (FIFA's ranking system is dreadful). Also, the USA beat England in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil and that loss kept England from advancing to the Final Round of 4. (There were no knockout matches in the 1950 WC.) OTOH, Canada rarely qualifies for the World Cup.
