Well, Equinox has received her funnels and there's something interesting to note. If you recall, Solstice did not originally have the "X" on her forward funnel. It was added while in drydock in Hamburg. (And frankly, it looks weird to me). Well, Equinox had her funnel installed at Meyer with the "X", but it is larger and more like the X on previous Celebrity ships. However, I still don't think it fits well on the funnel design.

Here are the two ships' funnels for comparison.

Interesting.. I still think it would look better on both funnels.

No fan of the funnels but much is improved with the bigger X. I agree with Thad that the X on both funnels would look better.

Greetings Ben.

I also agree about adding a second 'X'. I wonder why Celebrity did'nt bother correcting this design mistake?

We saw the Solistice in Greece a couple weekago and the painted X looks worse in person. I like the new X, but agree it should be on both stacks.

I heard they opted for the X on only one funnel because with two X's on the funnels and the large X on the balconies it would be: XXX. That would send a brand message they'd rather not communicate.

I think they should remove the X from the balconies and apply it to both funnels.

The added curves and depth of the new X is a huge improvement over the old X design. I wonder if they will replace the Solstice's on her first dry dock.

Sorry, but the Chi(s) on Equinox are horrible to me. These clumsy things totally ruin the appearance of the rather diminutive funnel. The painted Chi of Solstice works much better for me. This is definitely a step backwards.
Also, a Chi (or Chis ) on both funnels would look very stupid to me - one is 'sufficient' and far more elegant.

I don't know, I'm thinking maybe no X on the stack is the way to go. I wasn't too keen on the SOLSTICE X, but I don't really like the EQUINOX X either. One was too small and one is too big.

I wonder what those brackets are for on Equinox's aft funnel? Maybe another big 'X'?

I'm thinking they were just for the cables to lower the funnel onto the ship and haven't been removed yet.

I agree, Solstice's X was too small this one is too big plus wraps around. I like the fact that this one has texture and is not directly attached to the funnel. If they make the X's a bit smaller, keep the texture but make them flat not wrapping (not sure how to explain) they would work; and add them to the aft funnel as well even if it means the balconies X's have to go.

I actually like the fact that they contour to the shape of the funnel. Instead of the giant X on the balconies (which borders on being tacky) I would rather see the X's on the two funnels. Maybe on the Celebrity ECLIPSE they'll change it up. Maybe no X on the aft sides painted on the hull too.

Here's the X added to the aft funnel as it currently is on the forward funnel. Something just doesn't look right, she's designed not to have any X's on neither funnels, this had to be another idea of the marketing dept.

If you ask me the whole issue is the funnels themselves just don't look right. They seem too small compared with the rest of the ship. I probably agree that an X on each funnel is correct if we are setting out to pay homage to Celebrity's Chandris heritage but maintain the funnels look wrong and are quite different from the original drawings for this class.

I don't mind the X in the balconies. It adds interest to what is just another slab of balconies that appears on most modern ships.

The thing I find tacky is the "Celebrity X Cruises" near the stern. It seems unnecessary given the ship name already says Celebrity and it even looks to be in a different font to the titles at the bow.

I know what you mean but leaving the 'practical issue' of smaller funnels resulting in more space aside: From what I could see on photos they seem to have the right size when seen from (the lawn) aboard.

Indeed. However, it could be worse. They could put an URL or a phone number on the hull.

Ernst, I think you've finally worked out what the stupid lawn area on Solstice is for....it is somewhere to look at the funnels from. I don't know why I never worked it out sooner.

Disney seems to get the balance right with the two funnels on their ships.

Perhaps Celebrity should follow their style !

Actually that is my only issue with the Disney ships, the funnels. They look too stubby to me and the forward funnel looks too fake. I think they need to be on a base like the Norway/France funnels were.

I agree with all those who say the SOLSTICE ones look too small and these look too big.

And it still looks stupid having them on one funnel only.

I do think it would perhaps look better if there was no X at all on the funnels, they were after all designed not to have one.

I actually am OK w/two X on the funnels. It reminds meof Ellinis or Britanis. However, by throwing the X on the stern, it reminds me of connect the dots. That is the X which should be removed. IMHO.

The funnels are stubby, I agree. However,if this is this ships only visual offence it pales in comparison to some other designs we're being offered.

This begs another question--why does RCI insist on messing with their brands' liveries all the time? For example, when the Millie-class was built they had a blue-black-yellow-white-red livery. It looked silly and comic book like, IMHO. Later they came to their senses and painted the M-class to resemble the earlier ships' blue and white hulls.

Now RCI is making Oasis different with powder-blue hull, abandoning the white of the past 30 years.

And with the Solstice-class they've given up on the box/line funnel scheme that seemed perfectly suited to their logo, and the hulls are almost entirely white with little connection to the rest of the fleet.

Hello, RCI. Someone over there should go back to Branding 101. Don't mess with a good thing. This is one thing CCL has got right. In fact they've got branding down so tight that they don't even have to change their ship designs...just the funnel and paint are enough to identify the difference between Costa, Carnival, HAL, Princess, P&O, and Cunard.

Both funnels need the X, but dump the X in the glass and the one on the side of the ship.

Remember this early rendering of Solstice?

The image is hard to see because there are two superimposed. The line drawing is Solstice as built, the back image is an early design with a single funnel, set far aft, with a sleek interpretation of the traditional Celebrity funnel design. I do wish they had gone with this version.
