I have just done a repositioning voyage on the Dawn Princess from Sydney to Brisbane where the ship goes into dry dock.

Here are some interior photos.

The photos turned out really well.

Thanks for the pictures, she still looks great! One thing I have to say about Princess is that the maintain the inside and outside of their ships very well. I have sailed on the Dawn twice, her initial season and 5 years later and she looked like new. Even 12 years old she still looks fantastic. I wish the Sun and Dawn were back up in North America more I would be on them in a heart beat!

Is the dry dock for adding the enhanced features?

Sun Princess was in Durban last Thursday and is looking very good. Although now a little dated (and I do hate the stern) they are nice ships and very pax friendly, love the wine bar, the deck bars, and love the casino being out of the way.

However they can be a little bland, the spa is very dated, cabins on the small side, suites very small compared to others, and no real alternative dining. However lunch on board was very good.

My biggest hate - auction art spread all over the bloody place, you felt like getting up in the middle of the night and chucking it overboard.

Sea and Ocean Princess cruises were excellent.

Dawn Princess is still looking good. The Vista Lounge, however, has the tub chairs so close together. Royal Viking Sun had them crowded too when she first came into service in the show lounge. Very difficult to navigate in heavy seas, and RVL soon had staff to escort pax to a seat. The Vista lounge sofas looked comfortable and inviting.

I too have sailed on the DAWN PRINCESS twice, both times in Alaska, and your beautiful pictures brought back some wonderful memories. I love this class of ship having also sailed on the SUN PRINCESS in the Caribbean. THANKS for sharing. Great pictures indeed.

I've done just over 50 days on the Sun and Dawn, and they remain my favourtie vessels that are still around. The exterior decks are great, passenger flow works well, and they ride well in heavy weather. Perhaps dated by today's standards, but I too wish they still were in the North American market. I agree that the art marketing should go over board, and also that the fine dining option does not work well with a portion of the Horizon Court converted in the evenings. However, I love the ships and would sail again any time aboard them. I don't like Sea Princess's 14 day port intensive Caribbean voyages, and I can't take summer vacations so there is little choice for me!!

The bathrooms however must be some of the smallest out there.

Also poor soundproofing between cabins - well we did have some rather energetic neighbours

I sailed on DAWN PRINCESS a couple years ago to Mexico. Overall it was entirely unmemorable. While nothing was poor, nothing was great either. It's almost like that cruise didn't even happen. I sailed with a group of about 15, and no one was very impressed. For many it was their first time on Princess and they couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Several commented that food and service was better on Carnival which came as no surprise to me.

I felt the ship was mediocre at best. Cabins are small, and bathrooms even smaller. We had a standard outside and it was definitely worn. Tiles missing in the bathroom floor and lots of nicked and scratched furniture. The mattresses were old and sagging and the sheets were well worn. The corridors had seen better days with lots of scraped walls. The carpets looked decent but the entire ship just seems tired and dated. One lounge looked like the next and everything just blended together. I felt it was past due for a makeover, expect for the atrium lobby which still looked impressive.

As Mike stated, the ship is a bit bland but then again so are all Princess ships. A positive is the pool area. Very large and nice but the grill was always packed and the very cheap plastic furniture belonged on BAHAMAS CELEBRATION.

Overall I have no desire to return to these ships. There are simply better choices for me (even within the Princess fleet). I could not imagine spending more than a week onboard unless I was in a suite. I was really surprised at how small the cabin and bath were, which to me indicated these ships were simply not designed for longer voyages.

I like the ship alot. Princess did an amazing job rennovating this ship from the pool area to all of the guest areas. I really like the atrium its really shiny and the colours come together well. The rooms may be a little small but thats understood because the ship is an older ship. Also this ship is best suited for older people who arent looking for adventures and exciting times. Not a ship for me but a nice ship indeed.

Main features added during drydock will be MUTS and Oasis. In addition there will be the general soft furnishing spruce-up/replacement as is common these days.

I haven't seen it in writing but I'd guess that all the TVs will be upgraded to flat screens. Such a mod is always handy particularly when cabins are on the small side.

Members in US and Europe will soon be able to see DP again as she is soon to depart on a 106 day world cruise from Sydney.

Thanks for comments. I was impressed with the upkeep of the ship after being in service for so many years. The Portofino Suite that I was in really was not as big as what I expected, however the furnishings and finishing touches were allot better than the standard cabins. My personal opinion is that perhaps all standard cabins should be along the same size as the suites on those ships, at least then there would be a bit of uniformity and bring cruise ship standards into line with what you would get at a hotel ashore.

The photos were relatively easy to get as I am now taking them using a tripod with a slower exposure rather than attempt to take them with a flash light. It is allot slower taking photos like that, but they turn out allot clearer. The photos I took on Arcadia in the same photo album were also taken with a tripod.

If I had a wish list of improvement for the Sun Class besides MUTS, flat screens and the Sancutary it would include:

> International Cafe replacing the lobby bar
> Vines replacing the champaign bar
> Expanding the spa and covering the Lotus pool with a retractable roof
> Adding Princess Links 9 hole around the splash pool

Just a quick refresh, I think these ships still the best from the mid 90's.

The best thing about this class is that it was prior to Princess theming everything, the wine bar is a wine bar - no fake barrels etc. No Explorers lounge with the fake pyramid murals and staf wearing crap costumes, no fake lion fountain in the Italian restaurant etc etc. Just simple elegance - what more do you need.

That is the way to do it. (If you have a camera that is good in low light and a steady hand you can also hand hold them.)

A flash is not good for interior photos.

You have a point there. I hate themed interiors ... I am very unhappy to see that even MSC is now going down this road. Aargh!

The Wheelhouse Bar is technically "themed" but tasteful at least.

You have to admit that it's at least a very original name for such a webpage. The only disadvantage is that it can be confused with other pages like Cruisetalking or Cruisingtalking.

What is wrong with saying that you are associated with another cruising website ?

No point in hiding your head under a pillow !

I understand the website has been running for over six years so has been around a little while !

I was only asked to join their team last year which I was pleased to do.

It is a very friendly website with a lot of people interested in the history of the ships they have previously cruised on besides those now in service.

Thanks for the link! I didn't realize that the Dawn was getting this much re-done. I am glad that she is being updated, wonderful class of ship.

Can't wait to view the next set of pictures.
