It comes as no surprise to learn that Pullmantur has decided to pull the plug on ATLANTIC STAR's Lisbon-based schedule for the rest of the summer. She is being withdrawn at the end of May and is being laid up at Marseilles.

In one of my earlier postings, I indicated her low pax loads and suggested it was not sustainable.

This really looks as if she has come to the end of her useful life...for as long as she retains her steam turbines.

This is really sad. There are far older and smaller ships still sailing profitably today. I really hope she doesn't become a floating casino somewhere in Asia. Will anyone have the courage to re-engine her for ongoing cruising? She's only 25 years old!

When built by Boris Vlosov for Sitmar, he insisted on steam turbine engines for two reasons. First, he insisted on having the cleanest, smoothest sailing ships. At the time, a steam power plant offered less vibration than other available systems. Second, he wanted commonality between within the Sitmar fleet. Fairwind and Fairsea (former Cunarders) both had steam turbines. This way the engineering crew could be moved between all three ships easily.

It's too bad that what appeared to be a smart decision 25 years ago may have been shortsighted. I do hope someone saves my Fairsky.

According to Neil on an other post, her cruising programme is expected to be taken over by Pacific Dream.

Strangely enough, she's said to be soon laid-up in Marseille (where I'm living), at only about 60kms where she was born 25 years ago, a region she probably almost never visited during these 25 years of her active life.
Looks like a sort of salmon life if you ask me.

I hope Louis buys her. She would be so great for one of the runs from Piraeus or Marseilles!

Louis may be an ideal owner for her or even the Clipper Group.

Seatrade Insider is reporting ATLANTIC STAR is being deployed on a new South American programme, details to be announced. Her earlier reported lay-up in Marseille will hopefully be shortlived and I hope this new venture is a success.

The report is here:

Well she best stay clear of the River Plate, she has not had much luck there.

Do we perceive they are grasping at straws with this ship ?
