I have read on another website the QV has developed a very large crack. Has anyone heard anything about this?

According Patsy the crack in the superstructure going from A crew deck above the waterline to deck 7. Not much is know about this problem.

Greetings Ben.

It's basically a non-story at the moment. I was told last night about it, posted it in a couple of places as a rumour (including my blog) and am waiting for more info and photos. It's possible it's just crew exaggeration. The passengers have been told nothing. The crew have been saying the 20th April cruise will be cancelled and she'll go to refit. So it could be slight damage easily rectified onboard, something really serious or nothing at all. We just don't know and can only speculate until we hear anything definite or they do cancel that cruise.

Patsy! You posted on here! Wow!

I figured I would ask about it on here to see if anyone else has heard about it. The whole things seems weird to me. Shes still pretty new so it seems like she shouldn't have these problems. Also shes a "Ocean Liner" and they never have these kind of problems becasue they are built so much stronger..

LOL! You made me, you swine.

I really hope to have more info later today or tomorrow (I hate time differences!!!). My many questions should be answered - or better be. Hell hath no fury like a ship nut peeved.

Yeah an 'Ocean Liner' with a ding when the 'Superliner' Arcadia never got one.

I tell you, if this IS true I'm going to be worrying about my crew friends until they get back safely, hoping that ship doesn't fall apart. Mind you, I'm sure they'll be glad to be away from the brown and beige even in the mess. Fincantieri must have ordered too much paint!

Nothing was mentioned when I was a/b in early Jan. I liked her better than I thought I would. I can see why many former QE2 enthusiasts seem to enjoy her.

The first I knew was nearly 24 hours ago in a quick phone call before the crew drill so whatever happened must have been between Auckland and Lyttelton. Unless it was anything which would affect the ship leading to perhaps cutting this cruise short they won't tell the pax. As I posted earlier, they haven't been told a thing. Course any of them reading will know now.

Former QE2 crew don't particularly like her. Stevie told me recently he'll never work on QV again. He's been really down since joining in New York. And Bea Muller HATED the ship.

Hi Patsy, do they like the QM2 better?

Patsy....the ones who told me that were former QE2 fans, like her size and ease of getting around. Many feel QM2 is too big with so many long walks. Coziness was another word I heard which many liked. Perhaps working on her is another thing entirely. As for Bea Muller, it's hard to know what she'll like or hate.

Hi Malcolm!

Bea isn't at sea. She stayed with Allen in New Jersey and possibly may never go to sea again. She's suggested twice I go as her carer (she needs someone permanently) but I know she has ulterior motives. However, I couldn't do it all year round and a certain person refuses to go on a ship where she is, so he's doing me out of the few free cruises I could do!!!!!

Many of them have never been on QM2 but those that have prefer her. Those on QE2 last year who had done QV didn't want to go back. You had a bad crossing last year. They had one this year even though the sea wasn't as rough. It was noticably different to the sturdiness of the QE2. Also the slowness has been noted and all these sea days frankly drives them mad. The crew cabins are okay apart from the cruise director's staff who have single cabins. Everyone else had bunks. Poor Stevie has a tiny cabin, he's under 5 foot tall and is sharing with a huge 18 stone trumpet player! Everything done the way they knew on QE2 is different on QV, which is one thing Bea didn't like either.

Question is though, would they go on Arcadia or a HAL? Or are they Cunard loyalists? QM2 is too big, which I one reason we thought Bea wouldn't like her. She's not the best on her legs so that would be a major problem. She has said she would go on QV IF a certain man of mine were there and put aside her hatred of the ship. I think she's just lonely, despite being a grumpy old cow. I've been corresponding with her a few months and she really does want to know everything and be part of things. I kind of feel sorry for her in a way.

All three Queens are entirely different ships. Only the liveries, funnels and 'style' of decor are similar.

QV creaked, groaned and slapped her way across the Atlanic in Jan 2008. At times she sounded like a timber sailing ship.

True. Two were designed to cut through the waves while the other's a modified Vista with too much brown.

How long was your crossing again last year? This year was 8 days. By the time they reached LA they'd had 5 ports and the Panama Canal in 25 days.

If the information about this crack in the superstructure proves to be correct at least it was not caused by a bottle of champagne.

Seems the curse of Camila might have struck again !

This ship is getting a very good reputation with the reported crack in her forward superstructure and a patched hole in her bum where she hit the quay in Malta !

Of course, everything is done differently on QM2 too (from the way it was on QE2).

I think QE2 got "grandfathered in" on a lot of things. For example the menus are basically the same on QM2 and QV, whereas on QE2 they were different (more courses, more choice, more traditional/less "frilly" food).

Which is precisely why I'm waiting for more info and hopefully photos. IF it's true, Cunard can deny it till they're blue in the face to prevent their plodding cruise ship getting more bad press but the pictures will prove different. Anyway with luck we'll know one way or the other by this time tomorrow or he's dumped!

Doug, I have already said some have worked on QM2 and liked it. Therefore it's obvious they had different work ethics to QE2 meaning that wasn't a problem. QV is a different matter entirely for the crew and is immensely unpopular among them, past and present.

Patsy, could we have some specifics as to why the crew finds her so unacceptable? I would think the crew quarters would be an improvement over QE2 and the A/C is definitely an advantage to the many "hot" spots on QE2.Thanks in advance for your input. BTW, where is your friend now? QV or QM2?

When I sailed on QV I asked many of the crew (mostly bartenders) how they like working on QV compared to QM2. In almost every case, they all wanted to return to QM2. Apparently the crew accommodations, crew bar, crew club, etc. are all superior on QM2. I do recall reading where QM2 had excellent crew accommodations, but the Officer's accommodations are another story.

I think the crew feels there a special atmosphere on QM2 just like there was on QE2. Everyone knows QM2 is a unique, one of a kind ocean liner and that QV, well, is ... not.

You now have me really worried.
Is QV safe?
We have a wonderful pal on the current world cruise.
Should I email her and tell her to get off?
What is this crack all about?

Bmajor, don't panic, the Queen Victoria would not be sailing if she were unsafe. She left Christchurch yesterday at 1800 local time and is presently en route to Hobart, Tasmania, where she is due on Tuesday. Her classification society is Lloyd's Register by the way. Cracks in new ships sometimes occur and they are always remedied. By the way, such hull cracks are often common to ships in the same class (somewhat like aircraft types or cars that have minor design shortcomings). About six cracks a year are reported on Valdez tankers. The USCGC Rush quit a search and rescue mission last week after she developed a hull crack in heavt weather off Alaska. Fatigue cracking can be repaired, usually by welding, and it is hardly ever a threat to structural integrity except in the case of the odd very rusty ill-maintained old bulk carrier that breaks in two. Basically, these items are not newsworthy. It's somewhat like having to replace rivets that popped or were about to pop in the old ships before welding.
