I've just posted a brand new Decked! tour of the SOLSTICE at MaritimeMatters, taking the visitor on a top to bottom, fore to aft tour, deck by deck. Huge props to Celebrity's design team for bringing us what I think is the best new ship of 2008 and the most decoratively exciting ship to come along in several years.

Thanks for this interesting description of Celebrity Solistice. She seems to be the first ship in many years if not decades that has a (sort of) contemporary decor.

My pleasure, Ernst. I did go "on" a bit about her but she is spectacular and well-deserving of praise. A rare example of a ship that looks better in person than in photos, too. She is quality, through and through, unlike many other newbies that don't pass close inspection and the "tap" test. I think that a 1960s Modern sensibility infuses her style but she is less retro Modern than modern Modern, if that makes sense. Anyway, it is nice to finally have a new ship that I can actually get excited about.

Best,

Peter

I keep meaning to ask - In the library, those shelves of books higher than anyone is likely to be able to reach - are they real books, requiring a ladder, or just murals? Great 'Decking'.

Just murals Pam, not the real thing.

Ernie,

Thanks for contributing your great images and for answering Pam's question. I never got close enough to the books to know if they were real or not. No time in a very hurried 48 hours. I'd love to go back and spend a week on her but what is all this I keep reading about soot all over the afterdecks. Did you experience this?

Best,

Peter

I read that too. I never experienced soot anywhere on the ship. Sounds strange. Perhaps something is not quite right with the engine or the fuel they used?

Thanks Peter for your deck tour.

Bought back great memories from our 7/12/08 cruise. Absolutely loved her and agree with all the praise and plaudits heaped on her so far. Was preparing a review but as there has been so many, I lost the enthusiasm to actually put pen to paper.

My overriding feeling coming off of that cruise was that she oozed quality and no expense spared in her fitting, I hope her sisters will be equally well appointed.

Two surprises for me, one was the grassed top deck which I was ready to ridicule and dismiss as a gimmick and waste of valuable deck space, when in fact I loved it, my friend and myself had quite a few late evening strolls and the occasional tipple in the bar, weather permitting of course. I do hope they manage to keep this feature for our return cruise in Oct for the Eastern Med. It is a great space for a quiet read or an opportunity to get away from your fellow cruisers.

The other was that as others had stated, the many photos of her doing the rounds really do not do her justice, particularly the main dinning room, it really is stunning.
We went aqua class so didn’t eat there, we eat in Blu [great food!!!] so can’t comment on the quality of the dinning experience, but it really was a beautiful room.

Great connection with the sea, glass everywhere, super alfresco dining area at the stern, all we need now is for the product to obtain the X hallmark for service and this will be a cruise experience that will be hard to beat in the mass market.

I can't wait till 1/25 when we board Solstice. Good thing we are leaving a day early--the weather here has been horrible. Tonight -15 below zero with blizzard conditions and wind chill in excess of -35 Below zero.
Ahhh! San Juan 82 degrees awaits. Too bad it's only a week then bad to misery. Cabin fever is BAD!
I will be sure to write a cruise review then.
