REGAL EMPRESS is busy these days. This from WBIR.com:

"Millions are expected to jam the National Mall to witness history on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building next month when Barack Obama is sworn in as the nation's next president.

Finding an affordable way to get there is a problem, but a group of Obama supporters from Florida have found a solution.

They've chartered a cruise ship to take 1,100 people to the inauguration.

The "Yes We Can Cruise" will take place on the Regal Empress, a 611 foot vintage ocean liner.

The ship will set sail Friday, January 16 and arrive at the Port of Baltimore the following Monday.

The next morning passengers would be bused to suburban D.C., where they will catch Metro trains into the city for the festivities.

The Regal Empress will leave Baltimore the next day.

On the trip home they'll make a brief stop in Freeport before returning to Port Everglades on Saturday the 24th.

Cruise prices start from $1,100 per person for a two-passenger cabin."

There's an article in today's Miami Herald about the "Yes We Can" cruise. See Here.

This is a round-trip cruise from Port Everglades. Ships make cruises like this all the time. It is no different from the many round-trip cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, New England, etc. that have short stops in Canada or Mexico to fulfill US law.

You have no idea what you are talking about, as usual.

Yes I do, they are diembarking at Baltimore. I know they are heading to Freeport on the way back but how many people are going to do that? Doug I know alot more then you think. This was not a political thing. I love US jobs and the Jones act is there to protect them. Just like we cant operate trips that start and end in Canada anymore. Mainly because of their Jones Act.

They are disembarking in Baltimore and then getting back on the ship and going back to the port where they started. Therefore, all they have to do is stop at a "near foreign" port and it's legal.

If passengers disembark in Baltimore and do not return to the ship, then there will be a fine, probably passed on to the passengers. This is all standard practice.

If you don't like the law that's OK, but then criticize the law, don't take a cheap shot at someone because his supporters happen to be following a law you don't like.

I read that the onboard entertainment will include sermans by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the stand-up comedy of Father Flager and a live video feed (from prison) from Tony Resco.

Like many people you confuse the 'Jones Act' with the 'Passenger Vessel Services Act' which does NOT prohibit non U.S. registered vessels to transport passengers from one U.S. port to another U.S. port.

As far as not operating cruises that start and end in Canada...well it is Done Every Summer Many ships depart from the Port of Vancouver on 7 day or longer cruises to Alaska from usually about May-early Oct. Some operate 7 day round trip usually sailing Vancouver,Ketchikan,Juneau,Skagway and return..with some variations. Also Cruise ships do a unique one way northbound or Southbound trips from Whitter or Seward Alaska on the North and Vancouver on the south...very unique trips and all are legal!

Keep in mind that there have been many exceptions granted by congress to the PVSA.

Now it looks as though this cruise may be cancelled, due to sluggish sales. See here:

The article says IMCL requires a minimum 300 pax to make the cruise viable. I am surprised they appear to have difficulty getting this number!

They only have 200 booked so far, including those whose fares have been "subsidized." I think the rates are quite steep, especially for many of those who would be likely to attend. And people of higher means probably would not want to spend the time and money on such an old ship.

I see they have already reduced the rate for non-volunteers to $1500 [from $1900]; this is still steep imho compared to a 7 night cruise this time of year in the Caribbean, and only going to Baltimore & The Bahamas with a gala and the inaugural thrown in. With volunteers paying substantially less [$1100], perhaps this upsets some too? [not knowing how these things usually work in the US, is that difference the norm?]

Perhaps they should reduce the rate further and require 600 non-volunteers to sail; people may be more willing to spend $800 than anything over $1000 each when there are probably 2 to go.

There doesn't seem to be a precedent for this (at least I've never seen anything like this before) so there really isn't a 'norm', regarding fare differences based upon volunteers and non-volunteers.
