I spoke with a high-profile MSC person recently and he indicated that the F3 design was actually based on MSC's Fantasia hull. NCL took the basic hull design and of course tweaked the interiors and added that rediculous structure above the bridge, but the general hull design will be seen in the new Fantasia which has a much cleaner design than the F3 in my opinion.

Not surprising, and it will make it easier for MSC to adapt her to their specs once they buy her.

This is nothing new for that shipyard. They've used the same hull design for different newbuilds for a long time. For example, MSC Lirca has the same basic hull configuration as Coral/Island Princess. And Seven Seas Mariner was built on the same hull used for Mistral.

It is less expensive for a cruise line to use and existing design platform than to ask the shipyard to spend time and money designing a new prototype hull.

If MSC does buy F3, I only hope they make dramatic changes to the design. It's amazing how a ship as good looking as Fantasia can be related to an ugly duck like F3.

Fairsky,

you are correct about "Seven Seas Mariner" and "Mistral", but "MSC Lirica's" and "Coral Princess'" hull dimensions are grossly different: "MSC Lirica" is 251.25 meters long and 28.8 meters wide, while "Coral Princess" is 294 meters long and 32.2 meters wide.

Best,

Raoul

I think Coral / Island Princess share the same hull design as MSC Musica class.

Yes, I think Skye meant MUSICA not LIRICA.

The MUSICA-class ships share a hull design with those two Princess ships and they are all based off Celebrity's MILLENNIUM-class ships. I guess that means they are all related to the RADIANCE-class too.

The MISTRAL hull design was used for SEVEN SEAS MARINER and stretched for EUROPEAN VISION/STARS and MSC LIRICA/OPERA, and it was itself based on the design of the R ships which were based on the design of PAUL GAUGUIN! So the little PAUL GAUGUIN really spawned a whole flotilla of ships, some several times her size.

If you look at the GA of MSC FANTASIA you can clearly trace the lineage back through the MUSICA-class, LIRICA/OPERA and VISION/STARS right back to MISTRAL if not the R ships or GAUGUIN. After LIRICA/OPERA MSC really "adopted" this French design as its own, though of course with very Italian decor.

I do find it amusing that given Carnival's near-monopoly on Fincantieri's capacity MSC has had to go to France to build its ships despite them arguably being much more "Italian" than the Italian-built Costa ships.

Anyway my next ship is MSC ORCHESTRA so I am really looking forward to my first taste of the MSC experience, I think the MUSICA-class ships look favoloso and notwithstanding the dreadful-looking Tex-Mex restaurant I think the FANTASIA-class look rather good too, if you like huge ships of course. Certainly they should be a lot nicer than anything Costa has to offer.

Interesting fact. The CORAL PRINCESS reminds me more of the Spirit-class/Vista-class than MILLENNIUM-class ships. Also, I can see the MISTRAL/SEVEN SEAS MARINER and R-ships similarities, but not PAUL GAUGUIn. Interesting facts.

The connection definitely isn't obvious - I mean, they're around the same size but there are loads of ships around that size.

For that matter, the MUSICA-class ships are also laid out in a totally different manner than CORAL PRINCESS, though aesthetically they are rather similar (but without the stupid-looking Princess funnel).

When you get a chance, take a good look at the GA of PAUL GAUGUIN, then of an R ship, particularly ONE through FIVE (i.e., not the Azamara ones or ROYAL PRINCESS). It is extremely similar.
