Daft, not a bad name but absolutely no relevance to P&O at all ever. Given some 200 odd names to choose from I just don't see it. Of course P&O now want to be contemporary and youthful and trendy and all that so I suppose using something historical wasn't really going to happen.
Any bets the buff funnel goes next - to be replaced with Magenta - much more trendy......

Who writes this stuff????? "Evoking images.....?????" Are they living on another planet or am I?
Azur Princess actually sounds quite good.
As for the language in the press release, obviously got their talcum powder mixed up with something else prior to writing.
But also perhaps there is a clue about how P&O are thinking of fitting her out as opposed to Ventura - she will be a "haven of serenity" - no kids and bigger spa ?
Perhaps she could be the ships godmother !

Most P&O ship names don't (and didn't) mean anything - Oceana; Adonia; Oriana. Even some of the traditional ones: Orsova; Orcades, etc. They sound good and of course, looking backwards we don't just think of it as a name, we think of the actual ship that bore the name. But as a word - nothing, really.
I'm also looking forward to learning more about the design, and how it might/will differ from Ventura. Like others I'm intrigued by Nigel Esdale's comments about a "haven of tranquility" - perhaps there might be something like the Princess 'Sanctuary'. (Is that what it's called?) At the very least, perhaps Noddy & Mr Bump won't be on board.
I've still got early summer 2010 pencilled-in as a date to cruise on her. Something like the third or fourth cruise....
Its far better to have something more modern than using say "Canberra" which would be just criminal on this type of vessel.
I would have hoped they may have learnt their lesson and do something with the funnel casing, but I very much doubt it. Me thinks the phrase "beauty is only skin deep" will apply!
Anyway, looking forward to the update in November as to the interior style and decor.

I've read that as well, but it wasn't used anywhere nearly as much as 'Gloriana', I think - I don't think I've ever come across it.

...erhm....these names actually do 'mean' something.
I would guess that they have done surveys and established that the old names either have no value or recognition or alternatively are seen as old fashioned and hark back to a time when P&O ships principally shipped "ten-pound Poms" emigrating to AUstralia and NZ.
Don't get me wrong I thought Canberra was a beautiful ship but I question the value of naming a ship after the capital city of Australia which ironically is over 100kms from the coast!!

I think this one was actually deliberate: P&O directors knew that taking emigrants to Australia was likely to be a large part of the line's business in future, so they named the ship appropriately. I suppose Canberra was preferred over Sydney because of the 'a' ending. And of course Dame Pattie Menzies, wife of the Prime Minister of Australia, launched her.
