There's an interview here with the Environmental Officer aboard Liberty of the Seas in which he speaks about the measures he takes to "Save The Waves"...

Its probably all media hype to get all the unsophistacated passengers to book on their ships because they appear to be doing something for the environment. So that means anyone sucked into thinking that the world is coming to an end because of the environment will book with Royal Caribbean because its environmental friendly.

I am all for a clean environment but just perosnally thing the media hype around it has just gone a bit too far and businesses are cashing in on the craze to better their profits.

Huh? What media hype? Unsophisticated passengers? This is not exactly a press release by Royal Caribbean. It's a interview with an Environmental Officer by a travel journalist based in the UK, and the interview is published on his site and not Royal Caribbean.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Company employees cant just do interviews without head office approval. That is how allot of advertising is done these days through interviews that make it look like the company is doing no advertising. It gets their name in the press on a posative note which is what they want.

Every RCI ship has an environmental officer who oversees recycling, disposal of white goods, etc. RCI has had this way before the "media hype" on environmental issues. I'm sure other large cruise lines have this as well.

Most ships have someone on board who does a similar job, obviously on smaller ships this will be combined with other duties.

As for being "media hype" given the amounts paid in fines to the US government alone (many hundreds of millions of dollars in the last few years) it is very much a part of every major cruise lines policys to reduce and negate their presense on the environment. No it is not media hype. And indeed some lines like Princess have won major awards for their efforts in this regard. RCI win an award every year - albeit it is their own award and is always won by one of their own ships !!!! Which is obviously stupid and that part of it is media hype.

The issue is so important that it is only a matter of time before we see a zero emission ship being put into regular service.

Nice interview.

The ironic thing is that a zero emissions ship could quite possibly be nuclear powered and so called environmentalists are 100% against nuclear energy.

The environment debate is one that will never be one by either side.

The problem now is that companies are cashing in on it by cashing in on it. I know of an airline that is encouraging people to pay extra to offset their carbon emissions - obviously the airline is making a profit on this.

Governments also make money by taxing or fining companies for sometimes trivial things.

However if the Juneau Empire is to be beleived 6 out of 9 ships violating their permits this year were Princess vessels. I think the figure has gone up since then as 2 RCI, 1 NCL & 1 RSS vessel have also been named recently. How serious these violations are I have no idea.

The problem with the Juneau inspections are basically it is one lady who walks around town each day and observes the type of smoke coming out of the stack (no seriously no joke) who then reports the ship as not compliant. So no measurements are made, it is purely done on observation of the amount and colour of the smoke. Given that Princess call there more often than anyone else except HAL who were also reported numerous times....................................

I think that it is very conflicting situation especially with US environmental thinking! Cruise ships are not allowed to pump anything into the sea(which is the correct way), but in the same time in New York
-->

I agree in some things that this really is a media hype and all this because its in right now, it's cool to be "GREEEN" 10 years or even 5 years ago nobody really noticed things like that.
So most pax are still driving som big ass cars with huge fuel consumption, and the think thad world forgive them if they take a cruise with "GREEN" cruise line!
Don't get me wrong, im "GREEN" myself and i think it is right way!
All freedom ships has a state of art technology, from fresh water treatmnt to black water (toilet waste) separators. So nothing harmful going over board.
RCL is really GREEN, travel with them

Just out of interest, all Carnival Corp ships, all RCI ships and I believe all NCL ships carry a dedicated environmental officer these days. Even the smallest (Seabourn) have one. This was originally as a result of the corporate prosecutions / plea deals made between the companies and the US justice department, but as these deals have now expired teh companies maintain these officer positions of their own choice.

Indeed. Not commenting on which line does better or which one does worse - it is certainly NOT the case that RCI is the only cruise line addressing this issues.
It is of course a good sign that these matters are taken a bit more serious than some years ago, however there are still some problems. Going on a cruise is maybe not the worst option but calling cruises (also with RCI) a 'green' vacation is probably going a bit too far - one should be clear and not fool oneself on that matter.
