Watching QE2 dock at Gibraltar this morning, I was reminded of the CUNARD PRINCESS bow badge which Capt Ron Warwick had removed from the ship when he handed it over to MSC in Genoa back in 1995 to become their RHAPSODY.

He subsequently had it placed just below the Observation Deck below the bridge on QE2, where it has remained ever since.

I wonder whether it will stay with QE2 in Dubai or perhaps transferred to QM2 or QV?

I'm thinking it may stay with QE2. During my recent crossing on her, I was told that the ONLY items which will be removed before she is left in Dubai will be the two Royal Standards hanging in the Queen's Room. Those belong to HM and not Cunard--everything else is supposed to stay in place.

Now in practice, that will remain to be seen!

What about the Boston Cup? I can't imagine that they would give that peice of Cunard Line history go.

The Boston Cup is on QM2, I think. (Or maybe I'm thinking of another trophy/cup.) And all the other artifacts, memorabilia, etc. are part of the ship and sale, "lock, stock and barrel." Everything goes to Dubai, especially because it IS part of Cunard Line history.

Speaking of artifacts, what about the portrait of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip that was originally onboard Caronia of '48? Does'nt that belong to the Queen?

That goes to Dubai--people specifically asked about those two large portraits, the models, everything.

Thats unfourtunate. Cunard should keep these things. They play up there history so much you would think that they wouldn't want to get rid of these things which are historical to the line.

Yes, it seems a shame that these things are going along with the ship, but at the same time, they are partly what made the sale. Cunard/Carnival Corp. are getting $100 million on this sale, and while that may be lunch money for some of the UAE sheikhs, it is a fantastic amount of money for a 40-year-old ship, no matter who she is.

This isn't some unfortunate discovery just made by Cunard--they knew all along those things would go as part of the ship; it's all written into the contracts. My concern is that there may be so many changes made on board that there will be no proper place for the memorabilia; it may likely end up in a special "museum room" down in the hold, or where the engines used to be!

Wait a minute - wasn't there recently a discussion where people complained that the engines might be removed and what a sacrilege that would be? And now these artifacts should be removed?
How are these people who bought QE2 for a rather large sum of money supposed to persuade the 'general public' that this ship is special if they do not have these artifacts to back that up? Whether or not or where these artifacts will or can be used is indeed another story but if I bought her I would insist that every napkin stays aboard. (one can still throw stuff out later on)

There is a big difference between QE2s engines and other artifacts found aboard. Her engins should stay because they are historical to the ship its self. The other artifacts though ( such as The Boston Cup, The piano from the Queen Mary or the paintings and other things form other Cunard liners)
are not nessesarly historic to the QE2 itself but they are historic to Cunard and its fleet as a whole and should be kept on one of there other ships. I hope I am being clear.

How are her engines historical? If her steam plant was still intact, I would see reason to keep it onboard. From what I read, her engines and other machineries are the same as other ships built around the time of the overhaul.

The Boston Cup is safely aboard QM2. I had the pleasure of seeing her brought onboard in 2004, and it's been there every time I've been aboard since. It always sails on the Cunard flagship.

To me, the biggest loss will be the piano from the original QM. She should have been brought to QM2 from the beginning, in my opinion.

Now I am confused. I thought that was on loan from the QM in Long Beach.

Your right, historical might be to strong a word but honestly I couldn't think of a better word.

They are from 1987 so that is a generation plus 3-years ago!

Nathan, you are quite right, the Boston Cup was transferred to QM2 a long (relatively) time ago.
I had actually heard from Cunard's offices (and on board QE2) that the memorabilia including, cups, models etc., would all be going to Dubaii, BUT it is all apparently on loan only and will remain the property of Cunard. The artwork on the other hand is mostly being sold as part of the deal. Quite how and when any such loan would be recalled is not exactly clear, but then Cuanrd are often a bit hazy on details....

I think these artifacts will be safe with the future of QE2. I also think it is in Dubai's best interest to keep her as she is and not make any overwhelming additions.

I am glad QE2 is going to Dubai and not to the breakers. It is a good opportunity for younger people like me who never had the chance of going onboard to see what the QE2 is like and be able to experience her.

By the way, Emirates airlines today begins a service from NY to Dubai onboard their first Airbus A380. A nice way for many people to go visit QE2.
