It looked like someone welded a warehouse onto the beck deck and called it a day.
#2 is the Norway with the addition of the top 2 suite decks. I could never look at her with the same admiration I had before. NCL made no attempt to countour the additional decks to match the shape for bridge below. Band-Aid job!

Unless of course this thread covers ferries too, in which case it's got to be the transformation from this to this!

I must agree, that infamous refit back in the nineties was a total disaster - from a PR point of view.
I remember being on the dockside for the sailing, and seeing the aft end completely covered in rubbish, skips and all, it was unbelievable.
Cunard were so arrogant and let the cruise go ahead.
Even when the Queen's son Prince Andrew came to visit the ship, he had to be taken on a preplanned route which only covered a small percentage of the ship.
But, of course, being our beloved QE2, it was soon forgotten!!!!!!

Not only for a PR point of view - it was a disaster. QE2 was not even close to a condition to leave port with passengers aboard.

Emerald is pretty tragic too. 1950's glamour to 1980's tacky in one drydock!

Whether that had anything to do with her design, I don't know - it was probably more down to the incompetence of her operators.

These even make the jumbo-ising of the Townsend Thoresen ferries in the 80's look good...
By the way Pam, you are nearly at the milestone of 10000 posts!

Do you have pics of that. I couldn't find anything.

Here is MONTEREY at Port Everglades on 30 August 1988, just arrived from her rebuild. I sailed on the Inaugural for Aloha Pacific before they placed her in Hawaii:
The new stern came as quite a shock, especially as I had recently photographed her beautiful lines in San Francisco where she had been laid up.
Thanks for the pic and the website. What an awful rebuild.
But I tell you all: you guys/girls have posted some horrific rebuilds. My goodness.
