During the 2010 winter Olympics, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are thinking of chartering ships to accomodate nearly 5000 police and security staff. The ships would be moored both in Vancouver and up the coast at Squamish. Any ideas of what major vessels would be chartered for 2 months (Janauary and February) of a busy cruise season.

Going to be very expensive, not only would they be there for quite a time it is finding ships that are close to the area in the first place, Mexico is the closest. I would have thought prohibitivly expensive - almost cheaper to build a few blocks of flats.

As I understand it, they are looking for 'no frills', which probably rules out most of the established US-based ships. Despite the long voyage out, I would expect them to probably go for a couple of the Louis ships, which are usually laid up for the winter in Greece.

Ship charters during Olympics are common (e.g. Athens), but for 2 months?! That will cost a bit.

The nearest ships would be those based in California. CARNIVAL ELATION, CARNIVAL PARADISE, CARNIVAL SPIRIT, CARNIVAL SPLENDOR and NORWEGIAN STAR already have California-based itineraries in Jan-Feb 2010. OOSTERDAM, RYNDAM and ZAANDAM will also be there in Nov-Dec 2009 suggesting they will remain there for the rest of the season as well. MARINER OF THE SEAS is also almost certainly going to be there too based on her summer 2009 deployment (replacing VISION OF THE SEAS as RCI's year-round California ship). Finally, tells us we will also probably see two Princess ships based in California. This means there should be at least 11 suitably large ships based on the west coast of North America in Jan-Feb 2010. Assuming we are talking two RCMP officers per cabin, this means two of these ships would be required. Ideally, it would be two of the 2,500-berth Panamax ships. The two FANTASY-class ships might be especially suitable.

Cruise ships are also expected to be chartered to be berthed in Weymouth for the 2012 Summer Olympics in the UK.

Hi Mike

The old Royal Navy docks at Portland, which joins Weymouth, are now in use for commercial operations so the ships could be berthed there.

Only problem is the roads coming in to Weymouth are narrow and congested at holiday times.

Yes I believe that has been what was suggested, dock them out towards Portland, teh roads into Weymouth are not good, but from Portland they arent too bad.

Yes the sailing is taking place there and teh whole area is/was undergoing serious redevlopment for the Olympics, I know myself and some friends have been asked to help with laying on some stuff there over the Olympics, so hoping to bag a few nights on a ship there!!! :-)

I am in Weymouth tomorrow, so will ask my friend who is involved up there if he has any news for us.
