Queen Elizabeth II to bid farewell to QE29/4/2008Cunard Line announced that Her Majesty The Queen will make a farewell visit to Queen Elizabeth 2 in Southampton on 2 June.QE2, for 35 years the flagship of the Cunard fleet, was launched by Her Majesty at Clydebank on 20 September 1967 – 40 years ago last year.
Since then QE2 has travelled over 5.6m nautical miles, more than any ship ever; has carried over 2.5m guests; has completed 25 world cruises; and has crossed the Atlantic 802 times. She leaves Cunard service in November.
Her Majesty The Queen has visited QE2 twice since the launch – on May 1, 1969, immediately prior to the maiden voyage, and on July 27, 1990, to mark Cunard Line’s 150th anniversary.
Cunard’s president and md, Carol Marlow, comments: 'We are delighted and honoured that the Queen has chosen to visit QE2 to wish her farewell. Her Majesty has taken a close interest in the ship over the last 40 years, and I am certain this will be a memorable occasion for all involved.'
I used to try organise ship visits for the 'Ocean Liner Society'. I have a letter from Cunard that clearly says "only travel Partners and Media" are allowed onboard to visit. Who's going to break the news to her Majesty?
Mind, you she could go for a cruise on the QE2. It's about time.

Especially since she has taken such "close interest" in the ship over the past 40 years!

QM2 is also in port the same day. I had noted before that QM2 was listed as being at Mayflower and QE2 at the QEII Terminal. I thought they had it the wrong way around, but now know why. Has QM2 ever been up to Mayflower before?
