Some of you may have read that my number one cruise nightmare is to fall off the ship in the middle of the night...and drown!

Do you have any fears about cruising, including tounge-in-cheeks ones?

Worst fears that have come true...

-Being at a dinner table for a week with some blowhard whose not afraid to share every worldly accomplishment of his rise from stockboy to CEO, and not being able to switch tables.

-Being at a dinner table for a week with all dinner companions that didnt speak English. I ate dinner every night after the first in the Lido.

-Being at a dinner table with 3 elderly couples who want to know why you are still single at 40 and want to hook you up with their daughters.

-Getting your regional cruise line rep and Office Manager to some how get that much dreamed of and rare upgrade from inside to balcony, and right next to a smoker.

-Being on a cruise and running into your ex

Setting sail without your luggage, which has been misplaced, and the first port of call is at least 2 or 3 days away!

sitting down at a table with someone who obviously looks seasick and is grabbing hold of everything solid, who then later tells you about how good his sealegs are before vomiting all over the floor next to the table.

that and people that never stop complaining about the ship

A table of non drinking vegan men hating lesbians - can you imagine the conversation ?

A table of religous nutters

Non smoking bars

A table (or ship) with Mr Goosens on it ! (sorry could not resist)

A halaal ship - no booze !

Any ship that needs incontinence pants on board.

A ship with 24 hour bingo or art auctions.

We spent a week on Majesty of the Seas (Sunday Departure - Western Caribbean) therefore; a LOT of honeymooners.

We had a table for 8 (rectangle (not round) with 6 other couples who had ALL just been married - and from Smalltown USA. Being a young gay couple in their 20's you can only imagine how little we had to talk about at this dinner table.

Now that we're married (Canada eh!)...I wonder how the conversation would be now.

Sitting with a travel agent who boasts how much they got the cruise for. Happened to us on the SEAWARD in '92. Late husband who was still an agent said an agent isn't supposed to be talking about that. And sitting with an agent who kisses feet, a couple of times I wanted to deck him. He was a retired dentist who became an agent only for the perks. This happened to us on the second fam cruise on the SS NORWAY. Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And passengers who leave tons of messes for the stewards to clean up from. Like the time we were on the REGENT RAINBOW and 6 people left a lot of plates and napkins, looked like a mountain. It took 5 stewards to clean it all up. Passengers who brag and make the stewards and their assistants feel like they're lesser than them. Can't stand that, we're all equal and deserve good treatment.

Missing the ship...that happened to me on the Zenith while I was a memebr of the staff, but it wasn't my fault.

Almost happened while I was working on the Song of America in Ocho Rios...that time it would've been my fault.

Meeting a nice young lady on a cruise, some really nice romantic encounters, three days into a seven night cruise, then seeing her flirting and walking hand-in-hand with a Jamaican waiter in Labadee????

Working with a crazy cruise director from Cuba who has a terrible temper, and forces you to drink alcohol when you are not a drinker, and threatens to beat you up on stage in front of all the pasengers???

Getting a massage in the spa by a steiner, only to find out they switched therapists on you last minute, who happens to be male and gay and compliments you on your glutes????

Seeing a female passenger on a seven day cruise that looks exactly like the woman from college who tore-out your heart nearly damaging your emotions for life....absolutely haunting.

Being aboard the cruise and ship of your wildest dreams and having an amazing time, only to wake up and find it was a dream (happens at least a couple times a month)

Running around the ship while at sea, looking for your clothes. (another dream)

In your case it is a dream. Based on the pictures of yourself you keep showing on a daily basis it is more like a nightmare

There you go again clearly taking things I say out of context. When I worked on the ships I was a lean mean fighting machine...of course as I have gotten older, I'm not in the same shape I was when I was in my 20's sad to say. Your comments are predictable however.

Setting your Blackberry to "vibrate" and putting it on the ship's rail while you adjust your sunglasses ... just as someone calls. Over she went...

Having a glass of red wine knocked over your only dress shirt as you have a pre-dinner formal night drink...

BUT worst of all - the opposite of avalon1025's nightmare - turning up at the restaurant in a Hawaiian shirt, having forgotten it was formal night. That seemed to happen to a lot of people on my last cruise........!

I think a true nightmare would be something like this. Being on a ship mid-North Atlantic in some rough weather when all power is lost for an extended period (I'm talking days here). No plumbing, no heat, no a/c, no way to cook, no lighting, etc. and the ship just bobbing like a cork. The weather would be too rough for a transfer to another vessel, so it would mean just sitting it out. Pretty much hell I think. Worse then that would be the obvious. Being on a sinking ship.

Getting Noro-virus is not fun either, but at least it's short lived.

Ernie
