NJ sailed from LA still under her new name without the Hawaian hull art indeed without any hull art at all, also they have left the NCL America logo on the funnel and she still lacks a casino. She will cruise Panama Canal to Miami then on to Barcelona, this would give her about 2 weeks for the required work before her first Med cruise on the 30th March.

Given the relatively simple task one would have thought they would have removed the NCLA logo prior to sailing, they had time to paint out the hull art they should have done the logo to.

Lets hope she has a more successful career under NCL than she did in Hawaii.

My contact in Wiesbaden informed me following information:

She will be refitted in two phases. Phase one will be a wet dock in Los Angeles from 09FEB - 16FEB, at the end of which she will be reflagged and renamed. She will then make her way to Europe through the Caribbean. Phase two will be a dry dock at Cadiz, Spain, from 14MAR - 28MAR. She'll be back in service on 30MAR, starting her first European cruise from Barcelona.

I hope they don't just paint the red stripes in the NCLA logo to dark blue! As for Norwegian Spirit, she didn't get the NCL logo on the funnel during her early days with NCL.

I heard they had already started changing them over a few weeks ago, no doubt they are already fully NCL - ie: non US. They will have departed on arrival in LA, the new joiners will have boarded the same time. This is not unusual, Princess did it when they reflagged Sky Princess in Norfolk years ago, Italian crew came down one gangway and Brits walked up the other. Cunard did it when they went non British crews.

The chances of US crew being intergrated into the rest of the fleet is zero - they simply cost too much. They will have to keep some of them to replace crew from POA when they are on leave etc. However they did receive an exception a while ago that allowed them to employ non US crew even on the US flagged ships up to a certain percentage - I think it was about 40% non US. At the time I thought it unfair as the whole concept was about employing US personel but NCLA had them over a barrel and got what they wanted.

...so after struggeling to hire, train and retain US staff NCLA must have of laid-off 800 or so staff (based on the loss of two NCLA ships at 40% US Staff each) maybe more?

It's a hard world!

I doubt that they've had to lay off that many. Their problem was always struggling to retain the ones that signed on.

They actually have to have a minimum of 75% US citizens. The rest originally had to be Green Card holders at a minimum, but recently that was relaxed (another concession to NCLA) to allow non-US crew to make up the remaining 25%.

...still it must equate to some job losses. At least NCLA should be able to manage to crew the POA more easily, now they have a bigger pool of staff.

Have any of you American's considered cruising Hawaii with NCLA? If not, why not?

I was spoiled w/the classic Independence and Constitution in the 1980s and 90s-I loved those ships!! Also we use to go to Hawaii every year when I was a kid (my grandparents started going there when the Matson liners had to anchor off Waikiki) and at this point don't have a desire to cruise around the islands on a huge ship.

I wouldn't want to pay for the 10+ hour flight from Philly to Honolulu, pay abotu the same amount to cruise around the islands, then fly 10+ hours back. Too much... and would rather stay in a resort for 10 days than a cruise for 7! now if they sailed from L.A. to Hawaii... that's def. something i'd consider.

Hawaii is almost an extension of the US west coast and is close enough for a long weekend. When I was a kid on vacation it was not uncommon to run into several people that my parents and I knew on the street in Lahaina or Honolulu. The flight time from the East Coast is long but Hawaii is still a wonderful destination.

We cruised with NCLA back in '06 with a 6 day stay in Honolulu. We had a great time. I'm planning a cruise with another 7 day stay if I can afford it.

It is sad this venture pretty much flopped. It was a bit too ambitious and grew far too fast. That and the crewing problems really did it in. I really don't think foreign flagged competition is to blame.

I had a fantastic time on PRIDE OF AMERICA in Hawaii. I loved the ship and really enjoyed the friendly and outgoing American crew. American's really do know how to provide great service, as I see it in hotels and restaurants all the time.

Ernie is right, my experience last year on the POH was far from perfect, it was not the crew however, it was the management, there is no point blaming "foreign" competition if the product you are offering is below standard.

Yesterday USA Today carried an article about NCLA moving ships out and Veitch requesting help in the form of revised cabotage rules etc to protect his now 1 ship and he did say that even that ship may not stay unless it makes money (ie the threat of withdrawal) - however there were many comments posted from the public, I could not read them all but of the 20 or so I did only 1 supported enacting further rulles, the others without exception actually wanted even the exisiting rules abolished to enable other lines to compete directly so that NCLA either provided a product people wanted or they went out of business. They were also full of complaints about quality.
