The Princess website has updated voyages for some ships into mid 2009. Interesting to see the much longer voyages the Sun and Dawn are undertaking. For example Sun sails to India and Africa on a 60+ day voyage from Western Australia, while Dawn undertakes a 35 trip to Hawaii and return, then a 100+ day eastbound round the world via Mexico, Europe, Suez and India. The ships were designed for such longer voyages, and now their time has come! Now to study some shorter segments that perhaps my budget can afford!

You sure wouldn't know it by the size of the standard cabins. Tiny!

Ernie - not very impressed with the Sun-Class ships.

I remember them being a little smaller than the standard cabins on the original Crown and Regal Princess.

Functional is what I would call them. Much smaller than on the previous Star/Crown/Regal, but you can do it!! I love the Catagory D cabins, found only on Dolphin deck, as they have picture windows that are 5ft square, the same size as the balcony cut aways on the deck above. Have a look at the exterior photos of the ship and you can clearly see them. The deluxe outsides are larger, they are CC, C and DD, but they do lack those huge windows.

Exactly! REGAL and CROWN had some of the largest standard cabins in their day. 190 sq ft for a standard outside. Even today that is considered large.

I think the Sun-Class comes in at 135 sq ft for a standard outside. Small by any standard.

Big difference.

I wasn't expecting the one of the Sun class ships to go world cruising again.
During her Adonia days Sea Princess did also world cruises but was taken out of that run as according to sources "she was too slow" to do that.

Anyway far more better than the Caribbean East or West milkrun I suppose ;-)

I'll be on the RSVP Charter on the Zuiderdam next month. We are with 11 ships in Cozumel. How exclusive is that???

The P&O website gives these figures for Oceana:

Cabin without window: 135 sq ft.
Cabin with window: 155 sq ft.
Cabin with balcony: 178 sq ft inc. balcony.

I grabbed a webcam shot of the Dawn coming into San Diego this morning. She was 55 minutes late in docking and required the help of two tugs to push on her port side. The winds were blowing 25-30 out of the south, making docking quite tough. How do I post the image?

Sun class ships were primarily designed for 7-14 day Alaska and Caribbean. Of course they are quite capable of longer trips they just need to pack the stores in more closely.

The visit to South Africa looks great, I wonder if I could embark in Durban and leave Freemantle ? Might be worth asking.

I remember allot of P&O regulars complaining about the Adonia on its only world voyage stating that the cabins were too small and had limited storage place for their cloths, luggage and had much smaller bathrooms than what they were used to on the Aurora and Oriana.

I go on P&O world voyages every year and have heard a bit about the fuss when Adonia did its world voyage.

I personally have nothing against the Sun class ships, but I would not choose them for a long voyage.

One thing I noticed different between P&O and Princess is that on the Sapphire Princess the standard cabins were larger than P&O's Aurora and Oriana, but I found P&O had much larger bathrooms than the Sapphire had.

I dont think I can remember all the points brought up about the Adonia but I will give it a go.

1. The theatre was too small - it had less seats than the Aurora and Oriana and the ship carried more passengers.
2. It did not have a cimema.
3. It had less open deck space (meaning public deck space) than Aurora and Oriana despite carrying more passengers. Oriana has 105,000 square feet, The Sun class has 93,000 square feet.

Interestingly Princess boasts that their Sun class ships carry less passnegers than ships of equal size. Well Oriana is the same length and width and has the same number of decks, Aurora is the same yet is 10 metres longer and both Aurora and Oriana carry less passengers and have less cabins.
