Hi everyone, here are the latest photos of Queen Victoria as she left Southampton on her maiden voyage.

A bit of a challenge taking the photos of the fireworks as she was slowly sailing by, so they aren't as good as I was hoping!

Great pictures Andrew. It is interesting to note that the QV is "pimped out" with more exteriors lights than the AURORA.

There are rather a lot of exterior lights!

The photos don't show how cold it was...

Her maiden voyage to the Christmas Markets is certainly a cruise (whoops, its Cunard, so voyage!) I'd like to do.

Never mind the cruise v voyage debate.

There was almost a move to ban use of the word Christmas, so as not to offend other religious sensibilities during the "festive season."

Do all of these cruiseships that visit Southampton under draught constraints? I see in the pics provided above on departure QV had on here 3 red vertical mastlights on... just curious?

There is quite a tight turn at the Isle of Wight to clear a sand bank called "The Brambles", most large cruise ships sail as "clear channel vessels" and display the 3 lights.
There is no draft issue in Southampton for modern cruise ships.

As far as I know it is very common for larger ships (which would include quite any cruise ship) to signal that they are under draught constraints when they are navigating in more confined waters where they have to stay in a channel.

They are great photos.

I would like to know what settings you took them on such as apature and exposure and iso sensitivity.

I am a big fan for night photography and you may have seen my albums on this site already.

I always use a tripod and go for low sensitivity and long exposure. like F5.6 on ISO80 for 8 seconds.

I find a higher apature I get sharper photos.

Normally I use the "Bulb" setting, and an apeture of around f6.7 - f8 with an ISO of 100
Normally the exposure is around 4-6 seconds.

My camera is a Canon EOS 10D (soon to be joined by a 20D).

I like night shots as they put a different perspective on the subject.

The fireworks were visible from the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth where a dozen people had specially travelled from Southampton to watch them in the warm....

QV was yesterday in Zeebrugge, for the Christmas MArket of Bruges.

It was a special item on the TV news - as there was too much mist, they showed images of her model in one of the lounges to show her as she wasn't visible outside on the quay !

The news had also a nice tour of the ship, with the atrium, and the queens room, dining room, and a bit of explanation of the theatre.

Nice to see.

Cunard knows to get in the News.

(BTW is it pronounced "kyoenard", or "kannard" ? the two newspresenters had different prononciation.)
