Thanks Bart. I was flipping through the photos and they all looked "same old, same old" to me until I came upon the Grand Pacific Dining Room... Expecting another "Tsar's Palace", that one took me by surprise! Even more surprising is that, at least from the photo, I actually like it! The aft dining rooms in the other ships of this class are way over the top for my taste but this one looks rather nice, in a 1930s Hong Kong sort of way.

Looks a lot like the Regal Empress dining room

Like, totally shagedelic man! GEM (as do other NCL newbuilds with the exception of PRIDE OF AMERICA), looks like something out of the latest Austin Powers movie set in the 60's. NCL's decor is beginning to make Carnival look sedate.

I agree with David. The main Grand Pacific Dining room is a pleasant surprise. On the other Star/Jewel Class ships, the same space reminds me of a rather tacky over the top Asian casino.

Seems so - mind you, this can be fun for some days - I see these ships more like Las Vegas resorts or amusements parks.

Thanks for posting the nice pictures - I am looking froward to see more.

Ernie,

I have always liked the MOD look, since I was a kid.
It is much easier to do MOD well than Ersatz English pubs out of plastic and the God-awful 80's neon and dye laquered aluminum.

MOD design is intended to be used with plastics. Modern ships have to use them, so it looks right.

On Liners List, QE2's original Mod is missed, so I am glad NCL is bringing it back

PS: NCL is not afraid to use colors.
IMO they do a good job with it; except for the Tsar's Palace.

It is far more adventurous than the oppressive acres of beiges and browns of the Princess ships QV included.

The dining room looks great ! If you changed the shape of the chairs it could almost be 40s American ? The old President ships ? Stylish, elegant very not NCL !

If anything the colours are worse than POH especilay the Atrium - PURPLE & PINK !

Do NCL secretly employ one of Farcus' relatives, if anything each ship that comes out is more in your face than the next.

That said I want that dining room in my guesthouse here in SA, please sink her so it can be salvaged.

The poolside casino comes as a bit of a surprise, although perhaps any new revenue-producing venues should be expected!

Some areas are nice and then some give Carnival a run for their money with tacky/gaudy garbage. Bliss still looks like it came straight from a whorehouse. Beds and all.

I'm just not a fan of brushed velour, especially in colors like aqua, purple, and red .... and that is what a lot of the furniture is.

I do give NCL credit for thinking outside the box. Where as Carnival's new interior designs rarely seem to grab your attentions anymore, NCL's new ships certainly do!

I just wonder how the style will hold up over time?

That's the old dilemma - if you play it safe it's boring - if you do something very contemporary and new it can be outdated very soon. (or become a classic )

Ernie, then you would not have enjoyed any of the Costa or Chandris liners during the '70s and '80s, for that is pretty much entirely how the public rooms were decorated. I believe that the Italian Line ships had a lot of the velour upholstery, as well!

No true! I loved the Costa and Italian Line ships of 60's and 70's. I realize they also used a lot of velour, but the application was different. The furniture style was more traditional, the colors were more muted, and the velour was not brushed (or whatever NCL is doing to it that gives it texture).

Personally, I think GEM looks NOTHING like the Costa and Italian Line liners from the 60's and 70's. If she did, I would be the first to book a cruise on her!

These ships (all the Star/Jewel class ships) are loaded with fake plants and flowers at every turn. I think for the most part they look tacky and VERY fake.

When you don't know they are fake, you don't notice it.

The problem is they look fake. It's hard not to notice, and they are everywhere.

Exactly, The look too precise and the colour does not match a real plant hedge. It is too green and hedge is not 100% the same green right through...has diferent shades of green and maybe bown dried leaves and so on. I think they did not want to put real sweetlime hedge because it would be too much to maintain...? It just looks too fake...Alot of foliage is fake onboard cruiseships anyways so...
