Seems like the different lines gear their art in different directions so it is hard to say which is best.

Right, there are 4 paintings in Le Bistro, by Matisse, Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh. Very nicely-framed and really enhancing this elegant room. People are invited to come in and see them during non-dining hours.

Except for the casino the Mille class is first rate all the way.
I hear the dawn class is from the Star Cruises CEO personal collection.

Wow, that seems very generous of NCL.
I notice on many of the stair wells on the NCL newbuilds, they have giant photographs almost like wallpaper, rather than framed paintings. Although this can look very effective, I assume it's also a cheap way of providing art rather than commissioning paintings?
Art is not the strong point of Crystal (...this statue of the dancing couple in the Crystal Plaza - OMG - ) - beside that how was Crystal Serenity?
One thing I like about the art on Celebrity. It evokes a reaction. People love it or hate it, but at least there is an emotion involved. Passengers actually stop to look at the art on Celebrity, and try to figure it out. I consider that a success.
On the contrary, the "paint by numbers" art on many Princess ships evokes no feelings at all. It's entirely forgettable and commissioned to offend no one.

quote:Originally posted by dmwnc1:Art can sometimes be hidden on cruise ships on obscure stairwells, out of the way elevator lobbies, bathrooms, and on the ceilings, as was this one I stumbled across on one of my cruises. Any one know where it was from? The figures in the art are life-sized:
This is the ceiling of the Explorer Lounge a/b HAL ms. Rotterdam ('97) And is a recreation of the center piece of the Grand Lounge ceiling a/b the tss. Nieuw Amsterdam ('38) The original ceiling is now in the Rotterdam maritime museum.Nieuw Amsterdam ceiling.

Here:
The Rotterdam VI is probably my favorite ship. The enourmous arrangments of fresh flowers were art into themselves:
I loved the clock in the Atrium, thought it was magnificent:
As a side note we were parked next to the QE2 in New York on this cruise...does a ship in itself qualify as a work of art?
