That's a rather sour reaction, Mike. Given that Queen Victoria is no longer available to name the ship, and that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth makes fewer appearances these days, as she's getting on a bit, why not Camilla?

At the risk of opening floodgates, who would you have preferred to see conducting the ceremony?

Hi

As he should be the future King of England why not have Prince William to name the new ship.

Well she is not exactly a good advert for royalty is she ? Looks like a horse, nicks other peoples husbands (or at least shags them) and hardly scores highly in the glamour stakes. OK so I live in SA and we have not had the pleasure, frankly we don't care if we ever do. Hyacinth Bucket would have at least worn a nice hat and would have added that tongue in cheek aspect needed to the launch of CUNARDS new "liner". Sorry if anyone feels differently or is related to her !

Well, I think it *is* boring. And it's all part of the "this is a stunning, unique ship embodying all those aspects of the Cunard tradition that our passengers love so much" marketing spin. Indeed, it's *got* to be expressed in that way because you can't admit that you've persuaded the heir to the throne to name what is basically just another cookie-cutter ship.

As for who else I'd like to see do it, here's my list:

a) Kate Middleton. She might or might not bring Wills along with her, depending on whether they're s******g each other this week or not;

b) Jade Goody! - representative, surely, of a lot of Queen Victoria's probable passengers....

c) it's called Queen Vic, innit, so what's wrong wiv Peggy Mitchell doing the honours? She know about these things - she's been on a cruise - and Phil could manage security;

d) Brian Sewell - surely representative of another lot of her probable passengers!

e) Davina McCall, except that she'd want to take it over for Big Brother.

(You may have got the point that I think the whole thing is pointless and deserves all the flak as it gets!)

Perfect...

England's illigitimate queen names Cunard's illigitimate queen.

It's quite brilliant.

I know who Kate Middleton is but have'nt a clue about the rest.

I don't think Kate is a great idea as she most likely will be gone is a few years (or months) when Wills get a new girlfriend.

As I have stated before my personal preference would be Maureen Ryan because of her history with Cunard. However, unlike one or two others whose boorish comments come across as nothing more than infantile rants, I have no real objection to the choice of Charles and Camilla.

I thought the Queen was is really good shape. She looked terrific during her recent visit to the States and could live another 15-20 years based on the lifespan of the Queen Mother.

I think it's appropriate having someone so loathed naming that ship. The Queen, despite breaking into her hols to name Mary, wouldn't demean herself to be associated with that.

From what I can tell the reason is that she is not the late Princess of Wales. Diana was a beautiful and elegant woman that many people still mourn while the Duchess is average looking w/not much style. She may be a wondeful woman but she cannot live up to the myth or reality of the late Princess. There was a certain magic lost (the same thing happened in Monaco when Princess Grace died) with Diana's passing and poor Camilla has big pumps to fill!

Wow, a new ‘hot topic’.

Prince Phillip would be too much of a liability. He's probably say something at the ceremony like: "Built by bloody foreigners, wasn't she?"

No, it's more to do with the fact that she was in an adulturous relationship with the Prince of Wales during most of his first marriage. She is seen as the prime cause for the breakdown of that marriage and Diana's loss of royal status following that breakdown, which allowed a series of events to unfold that ultimately led to Diana's untimely death.

Many people now find it 'inappropriate' that Camilla has stepped into Diana's shoes so brazenly - note how, seemingly embarrassed, they have carefully avoided using her correct PoW title. I think they are perfectly entitled to marry and retire to live their lives together in 'private' but I would prefer not to have to pay toward the upkeep nor have to watch them in their current extravagent royal lifestyle. We are told she will never be queen just princess consort - why would that be unless they themselves guiltily think people wouldn't stomach it?

I think Cunard will come to regret the whole idea!

Hi

I think it is a disgrace that Camilla has been chosen to name the new Cunard liner after her friendship with Prince Charles before and while he was married to Princess Diana.

Camilla was also married at that time.

A divorced woman should never have been allowed to marry a British royal prince, even though he was a widower, and once they did marry they should have been treated the same as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and told to live abroad.

It just shows how low standards have slipped in the British royal family and also since Carnival took control of Cunard, with her being asked to name their new ship.

As a Carnival shareholder I have emailed them to say that I do not agree with their choice !

I think it's a good choice.

I have a great respect fore the Duchess of Cornwall. Don't forget that she to was badly handled by the Royal family. Once Prince Charles wanted to marry here. But it was not approved by the Queen so he married Diana. whit al the tragic that came with that marriage.

Now Diana is not more. Life go's one. the Duchess is accepted by William and Harry. Let's move on.

Greetings Ben.

William & Harry have publicly stated how they love Camilla and glad that she has made their father so happy. She will always be the 'dark horse' to many, but has become accepted by the majority. As Ben says, times move on. She is certainly a better choice than some 'Celeb' or other, but does perhaps give the impression other members of the Royal Family were not interested. Anne may have been a good choice or William, but Camillia will do.

The Cunard press Relaese:

HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL TO NAME CUNARD’S NEW QUEEN VICTORIA

At this ceremony, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall will perform the Naming of the ship.

This naming will be a milestone in both Cunard and British maritime history, and will be a major event of worldwide interest, with over 2,000 VIP guests from around the globe in attendance at the prestigious ceremony.

Carol Marlow, President and Managing Director of Cunard Line, comments:

“This will be an historic occasion. We are most honoured that Their Royal Highnesses have accepted our invitation and that Her Royal Highness will name our newest Cunarder. Every one of our Cunard Queens has been named by a member of the Royal Family and we are therefore delighted that Queen Victoria will follow in that tradition. In addition, this particular ceremony will mark the beginning of a new era, as it will be the first time in our 168-year history that we will have three Cunard Queens in service at the same time”.

Queen Victoria will not only be a classic Cunard ocean liner, offering the very best of our heritage and traditions, but will also be the second largest Cunarder the company has ever built. She will be in Southampton for four days, during which time over 7,000 guests from around the world will visit the ship. She will depart on her Maiden Voyage on Tuesday 11 December 2007.

Well, it goes that she really wanted Andrew Parker-Bowles and only went after Charles because Parker-Bowles was then sleeping with Princess Anne. It was no Romeo & Juliet romance!!

Sorry Pam but they would say that wouldn't they?

And, who are this majority that 'accept' her - she's as unpopular as ever?

Clarence House probably pushed her name to the top of the list as part of their rehabilitation process particularly after the fiasco of 10 days ago.

For me I just can't stand the woman. But then I can't stand that husband of hers either. All those 'lucky' pax looking at a pic of Camilla grinning down on them.

I think Anne would have told them to naff orf. After all, she's already associated with pretty ships which aren't pretending to be something they aren't.
