That's hardly ocean liner scaffolding. When they were building QM2 I heard they used special ocean liner scaffolding to make it more authentic. This looks like Vista scaffolding. It will never do. Can't build an ocean liner without proper scaffolding...harumph

This is defeatism. When I saw the scaffolding I knew it was Cunard scaffolding - my sixth sense told me that.

What does scaffolding have to do with it being a liner or not.

Maybe this is just Fincantieri scaffolding and QM2's was ALSTOM scaffolding.

QV, not a very good replacement for QE2.

With all due respect Joe, they are not 'scaffolding towers', they are contemporary works of art specially comissioned by Cunard.

The ladder like structures represents the Cabin grades on the Queen victoria and mans instictive desire to climb that ladder to the very pinnacle (the Grill Class Penthouse Suite).

Thanks for sharing KenC.

After the continuous whining on CT about no new pics of QV ... I'd expected a little more than these nonsense responses.

I for one, am extremely excited to be doing the 17 day NY to LA segment of the maiden world cruise.

Next time I'll keep the info to myself ...

Just looks.

It still looks like it will be one of the nicest ships out there but not a true ocean liner like QE2.

Come on - don't be so gravely. Giving how few we saw the pictures are indeed interesting - and I am sure she will be a nice ship - but one just can not take the comments made by Mr. Heald serious.

Ken,

We really do appreciate the photos and any news about QV. I was just trying to use a little humor to head off the complaints that will surely come about her not being a real ocean liner or being just another Vista.

I think people should wait until the ship is a bit further along before jumping to conclusions about how good or bad she will look and function.

Thanks again for sharing.

KenC, posting the pictures is indeed much appreciated. A little lite humor never killed anyone, though (not that I can remember).

One really cannot say that she looks fantastic, superb, stunnning, and beautiful when everything is still covered in wrapping paper and nothing is really installed; even the Royal Court Theatre, Champagne Bar, and Winter Garden doesnt even have seating in place.

Judging a ship not even complete, covered in protective wrapping and rubber matting, paint cans and saw horses strewn about, and masking tape holding up plastic wrap is indeed premature.

You cannot begin to truly judge her until she is handed over and the first passengers are ready to take sail....ONLY THEN can you make comments like 'she is not a fitting replacement'. But by that time you havent sailed on her yet either. Once you have sailed BOTH can a person make that statement out of fact.

But then again I dont think she is 'meant' to replace QE2, but to become the next family member in the long line of Cunard's amazing history.

Exactly - QE2's (overdue?) retirement and her deployment are 'just' coinciding - whereas she might replace her capacity wise QV has a different profile than QE2. I am sure she will be a nice ship - but exaggerations like in the blog posted above are as much annoying as complaints about her being a Vista class cruise ship. Vista class ships seem to be nice - and not every Cunard ship was a 'liner' - the liner cliche is the 'marketing scheme' of Cunard and a theme for the decoration their ships - not more but also not less.

I'm very happy to see new photos of QV. Sure the hardware is vista-class, but I think there is enough modifications to make her unique. I think QM2 was really the replacement for QE2, and a fine replacement she is. QV is more of a bonus, maybe not exactly what we all want to see in a liner, but a fine ship she will be. I mentioned the hardware, but from working on the ships and cruising a lot, in my opinion, it's the software and people that ultimately create the "experience" of a voyage. You can have amazing hardware (ship design), but if the service is bad, the food's not great, the beds & public rooms are not comfortable, then it's not worth as much and worthy to be slammed....on the other hand you can have a run-down, poorly designed, goofy-looking ship, but if the crew & service is fantastic, the beds & public rooms are comfortable and the food is great, you may have a winner. Let's see how QV does with passengers...give her about six months to shake things up and then let's critic her "liner" qualities.

Oh, I jus wish that they would paint the bridge window frames black like QM2's own. It adds to the spohistication.

Well said Barry. Although we are perfectly entitled to pass judgement about the exterior and interiors of ships, the onboard experience is the ‘key’. Just look at NCLA – great hardware, inconstant software.

The Cunard on board experience is subject to it’s occasional up and downs, but essentially the ambience, food, service, entertainment and especially the enrichment programme are excellent in all grades. That’s what you pay the higher rates for.

Having said all of the above, I do think that the interiors and even exteriors can help shape the on board ambience.

Remember it wasnt until the end of construction that the final touches were added...here is QM2 with unpainted windows:

It's hard to tell from this picture but it may still be that the bridge window framing will be still be painted black:

I think the only disapointing aspect is how the famous QE2 funnel is slowly evolving into something ugly. Now, it shorter than ever and has a wack of engine exhaust pipes sticking up high over the top.

Which famous QE2 funnel would that be? Lest we forget, the current funnel evolved from this one...

...which was the elegant one. (I do not like the fat thing sitting up there now)

Whereas I understand that Cunard has to reinvent itself it indeed seems as if the present interpretation of Cunard's tradition is somehow putting a lot of emphasis on relating to QE2 - it's not only the funnel but the restaurants (did every Cunard ship have a Grill class?) - names of public rooms (Queens Room) etc.

QV's rooms look nice, from what I've seen so far. The funnel also looks nice, and intricate, unlike Costa's funnels which I think look boring. Hopefully the outside ends up looking like the model.

From the pictures I think she is looking very nice! When I first saw the renderings I didn't think her insides were going to be as nice as, say, the QM2, but seeing them in real life pictures (even with all the construction) she looks pretty good.

Many thanks indeed, Ken, for sharing the photos. Personally, I like the way the ship looks,...but then I'm a fan of the Vista class.

The negative comments about a ship that isn't even finished yet certainly reminds me of another scenario that happened just a few short years ago,...

Do I smell crow (again)?
